356 tire sizing

I'm sure this has been discussed many times and I did do a forum search but nothing came up.. I would like to use a 16 x 5.5 rim on a 59 coupe.. I would like to know what maximum diameter I can use without a rubbing/fitment issue arising ? Has anyone used this set-up ?

I've not run a 16" wheel, but I've run a 15 x 6" on a 56 coupe. I ran a 205/55 15, so perhaps you can run a 205, but I don't think you'll get a 225/50 underneath there. Even with a 205 I think you might have to shave down the upper rear bump stops (I did) to clear on the inside.

Probably want to check the "outlaw" section on the 356 Registry.

the only 16" wheels ever mounted on a 356 were during the pre A years, those were 3.25 wide and were clad with 5.00 width tires (which are skinny). I think with a 16 you may get away with a 195/55 (195 is officially the max you can go on a 5.5" rim).

You may rub the inner wheel well at full turn.
