Question Will a Six fit in a Porshe 356 or a Ghia

Will a Six Cylinder from a 911 fit in a Karma Ghia or Porsche 356?

Hello

It will fit with some extensive modifications, however a good massaged Type 4 will deliver a more balanced car and will give more HP/money then a serious 6 cylinder swap.
The 6cyl is usefull if you reach the 200+ HP limit with the type 4.

Roland's correct on both counts. The six will fit, but will require a great deal of work. The HP/$ ratio does not make sense, in my opinion. A built TIV will provides loads of HP at a more reasonable investment (that is what I intend to put in a Ghia I just acquired).

Yeah....but a type IV does NOT sound like a six.....nothing like it....except maybe the wail of a flat 12....

Hang on there Mr. Z .....

Flat fours sound great. A tuned engine with breathing through a pair of heavy duty Webers and a good exhaust will sound better than a stock (post-74) 911 set-up

Mine came without the original but a 1200 cc from a VW. How much for a running 1600 cc from a VW? Is that the easiest drop in aside from an actual 356 engine?

nothing sounds better than a cammed flat four with a turbo muffler, a large extractor, and Weber 48IDAs/Dellorto 48DRLAs. Weber has just remaking the 48IDAs and prices are not too expensive.

Hey GSpreeman: There are all kinds of performance oriented parts for the VW flat 4. Maybe more bang for the buck than with a real 356 motor.. Pick up a copy of Hot VWs and you will see what I mean. I know a fantastic (German born and apprenticed) mechanic up-state NY, about 3 hours from NYC. He has built VW and Porsche 356 motors for friends - they seem to be happy with his work and pricing..

I'm finding out now that my engine may be a 1200cc. Is that big enough to give me any power, even with mods?

Just like a 911 cc's = horsepower.

If you are to put money into a vw motor to extract performance, I would start with the 1600cc dual port version as a base... VW engines are cheap enough.

With big bore kits and stroker cranks some of these motor are over 2 liters...

I agree with Roland....

If you want to extract performance, use a Type 4 (bus) motor rather than a Beetle unit. It should be more reliable when tuned and will push out more torque (if that's what you want).

The cowls came from Fiberwerks. They were a prototype that never went retail.

Excellence just did a story on Porsche 6 to 4 that puts out around 200 HP. You should look into it.

MikeZ what is Gruppe B? sounds kinda like r gruppe... very intreagued! does gruppe b have a website?

whats the low down.. what is it, whats their philosophy, how do you join, criteria, focus on cars, etc....

btw.. ive grown up around vee-dubs, seen alot of mods, builds, big bores, religiously read my dads hot vw's when he was done..
never seen a t4 look so cool, and your girl looks great too with those flares. you have one hell of an outlaw on your hands there! nice work

i know if the engine goes in my 912 id go for a t4 till i could rebuild it or afford to rebuild it right, and lately ive even thought about gettin a ghia as a daily driver and goin nuts with a t4. ive seen em in hot vw's balled out to 2.7, and maybe 2.8, just wondering where does reliabilty start to really go as far as when you get to the really big t4 engines?

thanks
Harry

See the latest Excellence where they show a company in Vancouver where you supply a late 60's early 70's 911 and they put all the guts [2.7] into a 356 [fiberglass] style body (they are very carefull not to call it a Porsche) looks way cool.

I'm doing a 2.4 6 into a 356 at the mo. It's got Elephant rear susp with swb 911 bananas and McLaren Koni coilovers. Currently on Zeniths but they're getting the boot for 40 IDAs. I'm going to hill climb it when it's done.
