356 Notchback vin number

Iím restoring a Ď62 Notchback and Iím trying to decipher the vin number again. Corrosion/pitting has eaten away the numbers and I lost all old notes and papers. There used to be a ďunofficialĒ Notchback registry Where I posted my vin number. Now the registry is no longer there, does anyone have a copy of the list ?

Notch VIN

Dave, maybe mention that the vin is under a coat of lead or filler?

Right Peter. I had a Karmann T6 a few years back and the lead at the upper part of the hinge pillar was smeared well down the "fin", obscuring about half of each number. The Karmann font (on that car at least) was much bigger than the discreet Reueter font.

356 Notchback vin number

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I know there is a number on the right door post but that's one of the parts that has been replaced with a donor part ('62 Coupe). The numbers that I can read are 201xx1 and the xx's could be 56, 58, 96 or 98. Perhaps another look at the list can eliminate one or two.

Do you have the original engine or transmission?
