356 restoration project

Am looking at an estate sale. Porsche 356 A has been outdoors for 20+ years. May be too far gone for restoration. But there is also a 356 B Notchback also outdoors for 20+ years. Very poor condition. Had never even heard of the 356 notchback before. Is there a distinct final $$ value difference. Cost to restore will be very high for either. Or should I just try to get the project with the least rot? Would appreciate advice.
Thanks.

A coupes (i assume its a coupe) are highly sought after. Even total rusted out POS cars find buyers and bring good money.

Notch's are cool.. For a long time they were the unloved bastard stepchildren of the 356 world, but now have grown into their own and command about the same money as an equivalent coupe., T6 notch's seem to be particularly desirable, The glass/window trim pieces for notch's are almost impossible to find, so make sure its complete.

Both of these sound like money pits though. Unless you can do it yourself, almost certainly the restoration cost will outweigh the finished value.

On the other hand, there really is nothing I would rather drive than a 356.

I've dreamed about 356s ever since I was a child. Our next door neighbor had one and let me sit in it all the time (50 years ago). Never thought I would ever get one til this opportunity. So here's the update on my Porsche acquisition. Made a deal at an estate sale for a 1964 356 Porsche C. Very rough shape but the best of the options. Comes with an engine on a pallet (obviously not matching). Will get it next week and start the restoration process. I will have a million questions and problems so please be ready to share the collective knowledge. Look forward to the advice and tips. Thanks.

Project will hopefully get under way soon. Just picked up the engine. Note condition in photos. Entire project will be the same. Won't get the car til next week. Some sort of estate issue.
Also where can I check out the VIN and get whatever original info I can?
Thanks.

Engines changed thru the years. This is the engine I was given to go with the 1964 356C project. Probably not the correct one. But what is it? How do I identify exactly what it is (hp)?
Thanks.

Looks like they gave you the A or B engine. Clutch, fan shroud, fuel pump, and oil filler are not C. Engine number will be on the vertical face just below the generator stand, will tell you what it is from (will be P*-----*)

Car looks crusty for sure. But with enough desire and effort, most cars can be saved. Good luck. Nothing will put a smile on your face to drive like a 356.
