Talking new purchase

Okay, so I just got myself a 356!

I have owned a 911SC and a 993 but never a 356. My first question is - do I check the oil the same way as I did with the other two?? Temp needs to be warm and dipstick checked with engine running?

Second, what about gas? Super?

I am sure I will have many more questions... thanks in advance.

I check my oil about 20 minutes after shutting down. You want it to have time to drip down into the sump.

For gas, use whatever you like, as long as it doesn't ping. Harry Pellow, (considered to be a 356 god) liked whatever Chevron was passing off as "gas" in California.

You may also want to subscribe ot the 356 Registry's (www.356registry.org) listserv 356Talk.

I guess 356's do not have dry sump lubrication (oil tank) like 911's, which would mean you need to let the oil collect before checking it. Is that correct?

that is correct...912's are the same way. check the oil level cold. I check mine before taking it out every time.

I'm also new to the 356 world. Can somebody explain the function of the oil breather and the hoses coming out of it?

To let water vapor evaporate while the oil is hot...
