356A TIRE SIZES/TYPES
I need a set of tires for the 1957 356a that I just recovered from a Kansas field, but I'm having trouble finding any kind of a performance tire still made in the original 165/75-15 size. What is the widest tire that can be fitted to a 356a without any modifications to the body? Any suggestions as to the best tire currently available for these cars?

I heard that the Michelin XZX tires had been put back into production a little while ago. These would probably be the most acceptable tires to put on your car short of finding some sort of period tire. I thought I also heard that these tires were now being called "Michelin Classic", though I'm not so sure on that one. I think the size you want would be the 165 SR 15 (165/65?-15). Anyway, call around and see if you can find these. I don't know of a sure source, so you're on your own.

Dunlop still makes a 165/75(80?) 15 tire. It's an M&S tread pattern unfortunately. If you get 5.5" wheels, then 185/70 15's are a good fit and probably won't rub the bodywork. I don't know if the 165/65 15 mentioned in the previous post is a valid size. It would substantially reduce the overall diameter though.
