new guy post

Just registered. Am currrently finishing a '69 912. Repaired/replaced nearly everything. Question is, is it best to post 912 engine stuff in the 912 forum or the 356 forum? Will also post this in 356.

thanks

You'll probably get even more engine info from 356talk

1969912:

Post it here if you like. There are several 356 racers running 912 motors [like me] who might be able to help. I belong tot he 356 registry but the digest talk format stinks. Sorry, but that is MHO.

You've repaired and replaced almost everything ... does that include the motor?

Cheers,

Jason

Thanks. I read a couple of other replies from you. Yes, the motor had ~186,000 mi on it after a previous owner had it rebuilt at around 100k and was getting tired and starting to run hot. This was 1989, and I was starting to restore the whole car and leave the engine essentially stock. I tore it apart and found both heads cracked and 1 piston (Kolbenschmidt) with a broken ring land. Sent the case, crank, flywhl, rods, etc to HCP. Everything miked and mag'd OK. Bought a set of industrial engine heads with new valves, etc., NPR P/C set, and had him redo my rods, lifters, cam (Maestromaster grind by, I believe, Elgin), polish the crank, balance everything, etc. Later, I polished the valve heads, combustion chambers, piston tops, and cleaned up casting goobers in the ports w/out changing flow area. Then I cc'd the heads to w/in .1 cc. When putting it back together, checked deck height and everything looked OK. Being scared (see other post) of susceptibility to detonation on today's gas, I set the CR at 8.75:1 (just looked at my records to confirm). It sounds like I didn't need to be so conservative on the CR, and may bring it back up a bit at some point. Put it all back together. Now, many years, 1 wife, building a house, engr. job transfers, etc., later, with ~1,500 mi on the engine, mostly moving the car from place to place, the rest of the car is nearly done. Just have to put in my MSD distributor (long story) and tweak the new Webers. Oh, yeah. I also flycut the 3rd piece of the case on a bridgeport at work where the oil pump cover seats to bring the pump gear end play back to low limit. Also matched ports at head, intake, and carb interfaces (factory IM to head match was horrible!). That's where its at. Suggestions welcome! EDIT: I also had the rods shotpeened (properly, not just bead blasted).

Thanks,

Jim
