Should I track my 356?
 

Good afternoon,
Was hoping to get some insight from other 356 owners. I am really beginning to feel the need to hit the track. I am the proud owner of a 1959 356 coupe that is in decent shape, definitely a driver, but nice example. I take it out frequently for some spirited rides on local roads and really enjoy the driving experience. Something about that big wheel and that long throw from 2nd to 3rd.... really exciting. My father has recently purchased a 72 911 that he has invested heavily in suspension (Tyson does great work) and would like to start doing some DE's. I am quickly becoming aware that I will be sucked into this vortex as well, quite willingly I might add. So to get to the crux of this topic, should I purchase another car (911, 912) in addition to the 356 to track, or can I have my feet in both worlds and get the 356 set up for both track and street? The 356 seems to be the obvious choice with the cost of 911s going up and 912s for that matter. Plus I do not have a place to store another car. I really enjoy the look of my car and would not want to alter much maybe suspension, race seats, new wheel / tires. Does any one else have a 356 that they drive to the track and to club meeting that is not completely outlawed? Appreciate any feedback.

If so, lately he's self-restricted to autocrosses. He blew up the motor at Sebring last year or so, and realized that it was as expensive to fix as a 911 ;-(

He's having fun with it because he likes being the underdog, but frankly, unless you are racing in historics series, you are going to spend a lot of time driving your mirrors and pointing people by. And he's a good solo driver... But still, even with a nice SC big bore you are not going to be very fast in the straights. He frequently takes on early 911s and -> 89 carreras. After that, the driver would have to be a tool to be passed !

great fun - this is a street 356 with some mod's (disc brakes, big bore, and some other stuff)
