34 year storage 356B Cabriolet

FOUND: 1962 Cab, T6, matching numbers. Correct & original Super engine turns free. She has some rust, but the torsion area etc etc underneath are almost like new. Right door has a pencil size hole thru the top of the door about 1" out & a perforated door bottom. All else is pretty remarkable. I asked the guy what's up with that hole. He pointed out a hole in the roof -you could see the water spot where he reckoned that enough drips of water over 34 years did that. Looks right to me. Doors open & close like new. Battery box has a neat hole the exact size of a battery whose acid ate thru the box back when and now just kind of "hangs" around. Hood has a tweek in it. & body has a couple of small dents. One broken reflector. Front seat lowers are split & recliners work like new. THAT’S IT!

I happened, by chance (& I mean by chance), to stop in this small town to ask directions to a place where supposedly a 1968 911L sat in a garage somewhere out in the countryside. The fella said why fool with that when he has a real Porsche (one syllable) inside & for the right price he'd sell it along with any other Porsche stuff he had.

She was found stuffed in the corner of an old VW shop in a small GA town off the old US 1 Dixie Highway. It has orig Lemmerz chromes - four are pretty doggone nice, 4 orig super caps in great shape, fogs, 4 band radio, boot, boot bag, both visors, top clam shells+ extras, etc etc. Only things missing are one inside rear cab panel, the fiberboard fuse cover, tools, lower horn grills & the keys. The car was hidden under pallets, & assorted junk & almost couldn’t be seen except for a corner of a bumper. Moved the "big pile" for over an hour just to get a path cleared around her for viewing. The shop owner planned to fix the cab & had some assorted “stuff”for it ....but he never got around to fixing it up.

This VW shop closed 18 years ago & since then the guy & his son was working on pick em up trucks in another building on the lot. Car has 56K orig. Story is it was towed into the shop in 1970 (has the 69/70 FL plate still on it). Diagnosis: burnt valve. Owner was on a trip north so he traded the car on the spot for a Beetle convertible + a few $ cash. The seller/owner bought it new, as the story goes, painted it aquamarine after 3 years because he liked it better, & put on an extractor exhaust (Abarth!).

Real nice folks, and after 40 years he was retiring. After chatting a while, southern style, I bought the whole lot at his asking price. Owner figures the keys and the panel & other stuff are in a box somewhere in or near the “big pile”…but I will look there another day. Says he has all the books & orig “window sticker-papers” too in some “maroon cover thingy” but can’t find them right now. He promised he will & I believe him. He threw in a NOS pair of 930 steel flares & OE 911S late 60’s vintage, wide, aluminum rocker trim, and misc other Porsche stuff since I was buying all his Porsche stuff. I’ll have to sort stuff out later. Why he had exotic stuff like the flares etc I have no idea. Needless to say I didn't go seeking the 911L that day....sometimes the good Lord smiles on you for no reason.

I washed the first layer of grime off this afternoon & it is nicer than I thought. How often do you get to work on an unscrewed with, so complete cab? Car was originally white. I get blown away sometimes thnking this car was only on the road 8 years in the south & then hidden away....waiting for me. Scroll below to see a first cleaning pic.

Outstanding! Dumb luck and a little money make life a whole lot more interesting. You mind telling us what you paid? I mean you could have paid 20K for all that stuff and made out. But I bet you didn't

Latest update: It is Allliiiivvvve!. New battery. some gas from a can attached to feed side of pump & cough/sputter it is running & leaking all over the place. I have been encouraged by many to leave it just as it is-unrestored, except for new brakes & a seal or two. What do you think? Thanks.

My vote is to leave it as you found it....I went to Ventura 2 years ago, there were 2 unrestored Speedsters there..to me they had the most character....U can always restore it at a later date if you want.

Leave it. A "survivor" car that is all there is just sorta special, ya know? Like others have said, you can always restore it later.

I would leave it as is also. It's a look that only time can create.
Plus it's cheaper

Also consider that the average porsche enthusiest will assume your car is a kit car once its all restored and shiny. The weather beat up paint will make it very distinguished as a true original 356 ragtop. And unless you did a very costly and very correct resto you would likely lower the cars value after spending thousands to perform what you thought was the the right thing to do.

How much did you pay ???????????????????????????????????

Kurt, I don't understand this fascination/obsession you seem to have regarding what I paid for the car & parts. What's up with that? I do appreciate your other comments though.

I am also curious what you paid.

I know it's NOT any of our business but we all like to read a good story. Hearing that you bought the car for an asking price of $10,000.00 would make for a good story, No?

Whatever it was, Great find! I vote keep it "preserved" not restored.
