356 in daily life and races
I have a question for all 356 experts:
The 356 is known as a sportscar which could be used for daily life and was also successful in races. (Some people even say it was the first sportscar for daily use). In this context I would need to know, what exactly ist he difference between the 356 and other sportscars, f. e. what had to be changed or screwed to use it in a race compared to other cars. I would be glad, if you could help me with this question. Thanks in advance! Regards. Cornelia |

356s were more comfortable and had more storage space that TR 3s or MGAs. There was more room for the driver/passenger. Plus the design was more integrated. Most other sports cars were a collection of disparate parts that were brought together to make a car. The major parts of a 356 were designed for the 356, not some sedan or tractor or something. The unit body made it lighter, so it didn't need as much engine or braking power. Still, 356s have better brakes than any of their contemporaries. To get ready to race you only needed to lighten the car - lighter seats etc. The Speedster was designed to be cheap competition for the more crude British sports cars, so it isn't as comfortable and it's already lighter than coupes or cabs. The "bucket" seats feel like they are made from real buckets, but they only weigh about 10 lbs. The windshield comes off with a 10 mm allen wrench and a 17 mm socket. You could drive it to the track, take the windshield off, tape the lights, and be ready to race. The truth is, even in the early 1960s by the time you made a 356 truly race competitive it wasn't much good for the street anymore, so "used for daily life and was also successful in races" didn't apply to the same vehicle. Hope that helps some.

I think the other issue is mechanical reliability and level of engineering. The period "brit" cars were not as advanced nor were they as reliable. Porsche's proved their moxie with class wins at LeMans due to their toughness.
