Talking 356 restoration project

http://home.earthlink.net/~rod4jesus/index.html Its not my 356, but it is my dad's. He just recently acquired this rust bucket (much more rust than metal) and is going to create it into an outlaw or racer, still undecided. Anyway he and his Porsche partner took apart the engine which has been sitting there for years and its surprisingly in good shape, the only problem being a rusted out cam gear. Now for the rusteration project!

From what I could see from the pictures it looks like quite an undertaking.
What does this need to be completed and what are your plans?
I am local to Utah(SLC) and it is nice to hear that there were actally 356's here at one time
Its too bad there arent many of them left here.
I am also beginning a complete restoration of my 356 acuired a year ago. The car is now totally disassembeled and being stripped of soundproofing and undercoating.
Keep us posted on the progress!

Josh,

Those photos look excellent. I can only dream about finding something like that over here in England. Rust would have moved in and eaten that years ago.

Good luck with the project and keep us up to date with new pics on the web site.
Will you be helping your dad ?

Regards from across the pond

Alan

Whoops,
I didnt see the link to the other pictures until today.
It looks fairly complete, as far as difficult to obtain items.
How are the pans and longitudinals?

Hello again, lets see here, the cars chassis needs major work, pan???? what pan???? Essentially, most everything will be replaced. Its going to be a LONG project. Unfortunately, I will not be able to help in this project as I no longer live at home. BUT, I hope to get in the fun every once in a while.

I'll try to keep everyone posted!

Sounds like racer would be best bet. Usually when you have to replace any floorpans, the value of the car's originality goes down considerably. This is the case with my 356. Just rebuild it, weld it back together, drive it and have fun! Unless the car is unmolested and rare, there really isn't much point in doing a complete ground-up restoration. Looks like a good candidate for an excellent daily driver though!

There are some beautiful examples of 356 race cars in this months issue of Porsche and 911 world. It seems that a racer would be the most practical bet for a restoration like that. Atleast thats my .02

Nothing much has happened since the last time I checked. I do know that it has moved into the garage, and is no longer sitting outside. Plans are to have the engine and tranny in within the next month so that they can move it from place to place. The car is looking alot more solid that at first. Plans are to get it track worthy in a few years.

BTW, its name is Oscar
