356 Engine identification

I am looking at a 356 that does not have it's original engine. Stamped on the case above the pulley is KD*P*780549. I am assuming this is a 63 1600S. Do the letters mean anything. Should there be other numbers apart from case match numbers. This is all the owner has sent me. Any info would be appreciated

KD means that it was serviced at the factory at some point in time.

There should be another number on the top of the case - where the two halves meet - that might confirm whether it is a super or something else.

356 Registry has lots of information on this topic. If you aren't already a member, you should consider joining.

KD stands for 'Kundendienst'. It indicates a factory replacement case; non matching numbers but the next closest thing :)

Good luck with the purchase!
