The Bank Robbers 356 Carrera
I posted the earlier question about Jack Walter's 356 Carrera but no one answered so now I have a little more info. This was the customized Porsche Carrera that Jack Walter bought from bank robber Albert Nussbaum or maybe a later owner. I was disappointed to find out when I looked at the bank robber's daughter's website on her dad that the Porsche had lost its Carrera engine along the way. I am not familiar with Carrera engine prices so considering it was bought in 1971, I would like to ask the experts on this forum what would have been the cost of a Carrera engine back then and what would be the price today? It seems to be that the replacement of the wrong engine with the right type would be a formidable obstacle to buying it , depending on what the prices were then or are now for the correct type engine. Also I wrote the daughter to find out if it was actually used as the getaway car in any bank robberies but didn't hear back yet.
PS This robber's MO was to use Thompson submachine guns and hand grenades, and maybe a recoiless rifle (maybe that inspired the Clint Eastwood movie where he uses a recoiless rifle to crack a bank's safe...) |

I am far from an expert but I would want at least $70k in my pocket if I was searching for a 4 cam motor, more if the correct one, more if in top shape. I have been a Porsche guy for 40+ years and the 356 Carrera stuff has always been at a premium, even more so these days.
Good luck |

4-Cam Motors
Gentlemen - a good running 4-cam motor prepared by one of the well know 4-cam experts, with all the details of internal parts, will set you back at least $150K. Add more for the correct Type (model) to match the original Type. A numbers matching motor - sky's the limit. For a numbers matching 356 Carrera Speedster motor- even more.

For that Speedster Carrera numbers matching...
If the engine, once prepared by an expert, is $150K, how much for the restof the car? What's the total? I think I read only recently --last week--a list of cars for sale by a used Porsche dealer in Orange County,CA where the prices for some were up in the $200,000 plus category, so the high price of a Carrera engine must explain how 3some 56s have reached this plateau. When I remember the name of the dealership I will post their top 10 prices.
Does anyone know if Walter eventually got a Carrera engine for his restored Dean Jeffries '56 356 Carrera coupe? |

Has any auction company tried an all Porsche auction?
If they haven't seems like a good idea. There's all Ferrari auctions.
By the way I wonder if the people in the Ferrari world know about the appreciation taking place in the Porsche world. If I owned a Ferrari v12 right now I'd sell it and buy as many Speedsters as I could. |
