Driving along in my '62 356/B, I go to shift and the clutch never returns to the up position....
I limp home and check it out, broken clutch cable. Wayne, or anyone, whats the best way to fish an new clutch cable through the tunnel (or whatever you call it)? BTW, in case you are wondering about the car from previous posts...I bought her about 6 months ago from a guy who didn't know what he had...car was in his front yard with a FOR SALE sign in it for 4 years...dirty but clean if you know what I mean...aired the tires, put in a new battery, hit the ignition, and drove it home 250 miles...car has 98K original miles, has been about 90% restored and I am finishing the last few items. I will post a pic when I figure out how... ------------------ Mark Howard '88 Carrera '62 356/B '75 914 1.8 resto |

Hello
Hang the new wire on the old one and just pull it trough. But first check if the clevis (? connection on the lever ) didn´t come loose. Also check the hule beetween trany and body. Original ones have a grease fit nipple but there are teflon lined around. Grüsse |

Yes, check both ends to make sure that the cable has truly snapped. Tom (my partner) always carried a spare cable in the trunk just in case this happened.
If you can still get to the old cable, then tie the old one to the new one like Roland suggested. Spread some grease on both ends, and lube your pedal cluster while your in that end, and also the throw-out end. DON'T TIGHTEN THE CLUTCH CABLE TOO TIGHT! Make sure that you keep about 1/2" of freeplay at the pedal. I made a mistake about a month ago, and tightened up the cable too much - bent the heck out of the pressure plate, and had to replace it -> dumb move. I got confused on a day when I didn't have much sleep. Anyways, you can damage the pressure plate if the cable is too tight, and you press down on the pedal, and push the pressure plate "over the top." Hope this helps, tell all your friends about the forum so we can build up some traffic here! -Wayne |

Thanks guys! Will try the technique. Yes, the cable did snap in half. Hard to believe it did due the the large number of strands in the cable. Wayne, how much is "a little play in the cable?" 1/4 inch? 1/2 inch?

Hello
The usuall play is 10-15mm (1/2"). Normaly the endstop sits correct if not lose the 10mm screws to adjust the stop on the forward bulkhead.. ( behind the woodboard ) if you are ther tehn also check if your throttle pedal stop is adjustet to proper hight a and grease all the moving parts, just avoid to grease the MBC bellow ( Can get brittle ). Flap back the rubber on the middle tunnel forward part and you have acces to all including the hand brakes. If a clutch cable snaps then someone forgot to grease them so best is you get a grease gun and search the 10 - 18 nipples. Regular grease sevice was 3000 mls but with modern grease you can stretch to 10000 but keep an eye on it. Grüsse |
