356 tach

What year did the 356 go from a cable driven tach to electric? 64 ?

My '64 cab has both elec conns & mech tach cable. The elec wires connect to the two 'spades' on the ign coil.

Dont have the cars vin/id number handy, , , ,

It was a 61 356B i was working on. removed tach and date stamp was 4/65

Actually it was late 1964. My 1964 has a 6/64 dated electric tach - same date as the wheels and many other dated parts.

Generally considered to be a model year (MY) 1965 change, at least for the pushrod cars. One of the very few differences between MY 1964 and MY 1965-- a defining characteristic.

Cars built after the summer vacation of 1964 were MY 1965. Summer vacation was and still is in August.

It's interesting that Porsche went electric with the 65 356, but didn't go electric with the 911 until 10 years later.

l.a., great information! I would cover up some of the details on your Kardex, like ignition and transmission key codes. Makes it easier for nefarious types.
