Question Hand Throttle?

At the risk of asking about the obvious, but I can claim immunity/ignorance since I'm relatively new to the P cars but what is the hand throttle on the early 911's for. Mine doesn't seem to work anyway. I assume it is some kind of mechanical cruise control, is it used help starting. I bought my car as a project so haven't yet driven it on the road.

That's what it is..merely a hand throttle. Designed to give a bit more throttle until the car is warmed up. I'm not familiar with how it's adjusted. Mine never needed it, so I just left it alone. Warren, John, anybody, does this device differ between MFI and Carb cars?

...you know when you start car in the cold and it has trouble holding idle where it needs to be...hand throttle actually grabs the throttle linkage and pushes the gas a little. It's so simple that it's kinda cool. Very useful (coming from someone that did not have it operational and then had it attached)

if you pull aside the carpet just under the hand throttle knob, you will see an access hole in the tunnel. look in with a flashlight and you will see a round aluminum knob with a setscrew in it. lift the throttle arm and you will see a yellowish plastic slider come up behind the aluminum knob. usually the knob needs to be adjusted rearward, so the slider can push it forward. just loosen the setscrew enough to slide the aluminum piece rearward and retighten the setscrew. keep the screwdriver in the setscrew as you do this, or the aluminum piece will rotate, or fall into the tunnel, as it is slotted on it's side.

The hand throttle is extremely useful on MFI cars which do NOT like to run well the first 5-10 minutes. On my car I pull it fully up when starting and then slowly nudge it down as I'm driving and the idle speed starts creeping up.

If there is no movement of the gas pedal when you pull the lever all the way up ... the plastic link may be broken. #19 in the 1st diagram below. The aluminum 'knob' John referred to is #21, and the setscrew is #22 in the 2nd diagram below:

As Warren said, the plastic piece, #19, may be broken. I think on many of these older MFI cars, the plastic piece is in pieces on the bottom of the tunnel. These cars are now 28+ years old and that plastic gets brittle and falls apart. Many repairs begin with a new plastic connector.

Both my cars have a non-functioning handthrottle. The '69 worked for a while then stopped. The '75 was broken when I bought it. I am too lazy to fix it, but it usually only requires a minute or two at idle before I can drive off ok, then it is fine (although I usually run the idle up at the traffic lights too).

I really ought to fix it
