Mystery metal in my fuel tank... what is this?

I recently pulled the fuel tank out of my '73T (non-swirl pot), to get it checked out and cleaned up. The inside is pretty rusty, as expected for the age and mileage.

As I flushed it a few times w Simple Green, I noticed the sound of something rattling around inside. I was able to fish out this part with a magnet:

Any ideas what this might be? There's no way I'm getting it back into the tank in it's proper location (wherever that may be) without cutting the thing open, so I'm hoping it's not really needed!

Thanks,

Jake

Looks like the later unleaded hose block off in the fill neck.

Doesn't look very important.

And the car ran fine with it loose, so will run fine with it gone

Yes that is it. I also broke off the blockoff in the filler neck on my 72. I did it by turning and forcing the fuel filler like a retard. It would be nice to weld it back in one day, or weld back an NOS piece.

Thanks, All! I was hoping it'd be something minor like that.

The swirl pot and baffle was introduced in the 1973.5T tank (first CIS model) and forward. I do not believe the 1973 911 tank has the swirl pot or baffle. This to me would be easier to restore. Look inside with a flashlight and mirror (thru the fuel level gauge port) and see if a baffle or swirl pot exists. Does the bottom of the tank have the large 22mm filter? This is where the POR tank restoration products would do well (fuel line in, fuel line out).

The Dansk late model reproduction tanks do not have this in tank Pre-Filter to protect the pump.

I can help with an in-line one if needed.

Please email me only.
