Introduction and build thread - 1971 911T Targa

Picked up this Albert Blue 1971 911T targa back in April.

The previous owner had some age related health issues and the car had been parked over a decade in the garage sitting unused ever since. With a sense of adventure (or glutton for punishment) I purchased the car, performed some basic maintenance, and set off on an epic 3000 mile road trip with my wife. Of course something broke nearly every day of the trip but thanks to this forum my wife and I were always able to push on.

With the car back home I've spent the past 6 weeks working in the engine compartment... rebuilding the Zenith carbs, engine shroud, fan-fan shroud-air vanes, new sound pad, and a general tidying up of the engine bay.

Had the targa top restored by Dan Petchel Cars Inc. Other than one split rubber seal it looks first rate and has been leak free in the off rain showers and one freak snowstorm we hit during the road trip.

Next up will be refurbishing the ignition system. Still need to decide if I want to keep the ignition system stock or upgrade.

The car is @targatuesday on instagram

Nice score Brian and what a classic color. You are a brave man, with a spouse who is either very patient or has a real sense of adventure.

As far as ignition, I would go Pertronix all the way. Instal and forget it. No muss and messing around.

Congrats

Wow, Brian--you are a brave man indeed! I've done several arrive-and-drive-home road trips, but never in a car so old. It's always an adventure, but my wife wants no part of those journeys, so I do them solo.

Beautiful car. FWIW, those 2,2 Zenith motors are sweet running. One of Porsche's finest.

I hope so. I just rebuilt the carbs and it was not so sweet beforehand. Still need to do some work on the ignition but just with the refurbished carbs the engine feels much more eager!

Just back from Porsche Werks Reunion Monterey. The drive from Arizona to Monterey and back was epic taking in many of my favorite canyon and mountain roads. The event was amazing with hundreds of beautiful Porsches from past and present.

I did a lot of work to the car beforehand, sorted the ignition and reset the timing, new Dansk sport muffler, and a lot of little details. Have to give a shout out to Becks European who did some last minute fine tuning and dialed in the overall running of the engine much better than I could have on my own. They also discovered & corrected a few issues with the work done by the shop who had done the PPI. Plus they fixed some annoying oil leaks, including a nasty RMS leak, and replaced the clutch. On top of all of that the alternator died about 24 hours before I was set to leave for Monterey and Becks had a new one installed in record time. The car ran perfectly the entire trip from sea-level to the 10,000 ft mountain pass at Yosemite and in temps ranging from 50º-115º F.

Overall it was an amazing trip. Just wished I could have met up with other members here. Next time!
