The shift linkage in '69 911T started making weird popping/loose metal noises when changing gear, so I took it to my mechanic, who recommended changing the bushings/universal joint. The universal joint was replaced with a much more robust aftermarket unit. He also said I needed a cable clutch adjustment and did that.
Now the shifts are crisp and superb. But the transmission is noticeably whinier. First gear almost sounds like reverse! Here are the details: 1. First is the worst, but all the gears whine. 2. This only happens in gear. 3. It's loudest under load. 4. If I let up on the throttle, I hear a little chatter sound and then a much fainter whine. 5. If a press the clutch pedal, the whine goes away completely. 6. There seems to be a lot of resonance in the linkage itself. The noise sounds like it's coming more from the front by the shifter than back the transmission, and even moving the shifter through the gears has more of a hollow metal pipe sound than before. 7. I took the carpet out to reach the linkage which may have been dampening some sound. So I'm wondering: 1. Is this a problem? Am I hurting the car? 2. Could this just be the more robust linkage resonating more sound? 3. Could the linkage be misaligned somehow and now the transmission is wearing funny? 4. Could this be a fluids issue? 5. Could this be the result of the clutch cable adjustment instead of the shifter, since it only happens when the clutch is engaged? What do we think? |

Probably that aftermarket shift coupler, there's a reason the original had some built -in clearance.
