as tony has said, the engine/CIS is designed to start from the CSV, thus its name.

injectors not spraying is an easy issue to test and should not take this long resolve.
you have flexible lines, makes it even easier.

pull out the injectors, put then in a jar, turn on the key and lift the sensor plate.
if you are not sure about the mixture, adjust it richer until they start to spray then lean it out until they stop.

I am not sure if you said the car will or will not start. your concern seems to be that they don't spray when cranking

I assume I've made a mistake when I messed with the engine harness or I've made a mistake when putting things back on the engine but I don't understand what it could be that would cause this behaviour. Any ideas?

Born,

Are you aware that you have two (2) decel valves on your motor? Take a closer look at the above picture. Replace one of the DV’s with a good working AAV. Right now you have a good source of unmetered air and I doubt you could make the motor to start at all. Keep us posted. Thanks.

If only I had properly taken in what you guys told me from the start:

...sounds like your dist may be in 180 out [...] backfiring is tell tail sign of either the dist is in backwords.
verify #1 intake valve closes then Z1 comes to the top.
rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire and line on dist.

Of course I had the distributor in backwards but I was so caught up on the fuel not spraying so my brain blocked that information. I finally checked it and once fixed it started right up! I feel really embarrassed for not being a better listener but at least I've learned for next time. SmileWavy

This was also a problem actually. I've had a cold start problem for years and always having to run the fuel pump before the car would start. Turns out the wire to 86/87a was on the wrong fuse which didn't power them on cranking. So the engine has always started on residual pressure...

Thank you all that replied and again, sorry for not taking in what you told me.

Cheers,
Björn

I have no idea about this configuration. It has been there since I bought it and I have a good drop in RPM when opening the oil tank lid so it seems to not leak that bad

yea, I was getting frustrated.

my neighbor across the pond was trying to get a truck started. heard it backfire thru the carb. after 2 or 3 times I hollered your dist is in backwards. 5 min later I heard it start up.

Sorry about creating frustration, and thanks again for your help.
