Question Headlight Washer Sprays When Lights Are Turned On

Just when you think you are getting ahead...

Turned on my headlights this evening and to my surprise my headlight washers sprayed my freshly cleaned car/windshield leaving water spots

Never checked to see if they worked before, but now I'm sure they do, but why when I turn on the headlights? They spray when the light switch is just hitting the running light switch postion (half way pulled out).

Getting ahead... I did some work on my car today (nothing that I would think could cause the problem): Removed my vent blower fan (left the 4 pronged connector unplugged, connectors are recessed). Reversed my windshield wiper arms. Began removing air conditioning system (components in the engine compartment).

Any idea what could be causing this? Though I rarely clean the car or drive it at night for that matter, it's anoying none the less.

Thanks, Gordo

Cut the wires to the pump.....then gently remove said pump, take to nearest large body of water and give it the sacred float test....if it does not sink, give it mouth to mouth to resusitate, then re-install and live with it....

Gordo,

Did you ever figure this out? I assume it's a grounding issue, but don't want to chase my tail. Yes, I realize this post is 14 years old..

Thanks,
Matt

Rather than "cutting" the wires, just disconnect the headlight washer pump

Hasn't the tank long since run dry?

Matt,

The headlight cleaner switch is powered when the headlight switch is in park or on positions (fuse 7 block 2). If your headlight washer switch was left on or it has failed in the closed position, then power will get to the headlight cleaning relay and energize the pump. I am basing this in my 1985 and similar vintage car.

Mike
