Another window switch problem
Hi all. I recently replaced my old door panels with leather rs ones. Anyway, I had some difficulties reattaching the window switch wiring but with help on here got the connections right. So I had reattached the wires and was rolling down the window using the switch and bang, a spark from the wires and a small puff of smoke and the window stopped. Switch no longer worked. I thought I’d better order a new switch and I just got it. That doesn’t work either. 😩😩😩. Anyone have ideas how to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it????

Sounds like a short. Did you check the fuses?

Yes. 😩😩😩

Smoke is not a good thing. Check in the area you saw/smelled the smoke for burnt/fused wires and replace. Triple check your wiring to the switch is correct. Me thinks you transposed the wires.
I bet your new switch works so replace an existing switch with it and give it a try after you carefully document which color wires go where. |
Not sure if this is your problem but I chased a non working window switch issue for YEARS on my '88. At some point I decided to dig into the wires themselves...turned out to be there was a "kink" in one of the wires where it entered the door. It would randomly connect and disconnect which made trouble shooting a total waste of time. You say you did some work on the doors so maybe check that? Good luck.

Sounds like you took apart a working window switch. Mis-wired it when re-installing it and possibly applied power across the switch contacts.
Sounds like you need to troubleshoot with a schematic and DVM |

Apply 12 volts across blue wires to check motors, if they work then work your way back up to the switches. Double check all your connections.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I’m working on it 😩😩😩😩
