Dash face backdate
The dash on my 74 needs some TLC. There are numerous articles on dash replacement but I cant find anything on the dash face. This is my inspiration. I love the simplicity of the early dashes. Rennline told me they are working on something.

Kinda depends on what you want to eliminate or keep. It is just a matter of replacing the vinyl inlays. Not sure why you would want to delete the glove box. That would be a project IMO and only save a couple of ounces in weight.
Here is mine, sorry the crappy picture. Heater control deleted and a removable radio cover plate.

Oops, I want my glove box. I better find a new photo for inspiration.
My question is really is the metal dash the same from 73 to 74? Can I simply remove the thick foam pieces from my dash face and replace with the thin pieces of aluminum? Thanks David |

You can buy all the pieces to backdate your dash.

That’s from Rennline. Although, I believe that one has been modified.

Are you saying that I can remove my 74 foam dash face and install the 73 components?
Thanks David |

I used the rennline dash and put the older longhood style trim on it...got rid of most of the gooblygoop in the process (switches, glovebox and such).

Harpo, I got the black version of that Rennline dash cover. I wanted all the glovebox and climate controls and other bit deleted and this covers all those holes. I then bought the aluminum trim pieces off ebay from a guy that supplied them to my length. See my process for putting it together here (starting at post 44):
so this is how a backdate project starts... tbone1209, you can get that look for about $175 by doing it yourself. The aluminum trim pieces are about $125, the precut vinyl that still needs trimming is less than $50 and then some double sided tape and glue. I show how I did it in the link above. You can buy the trim pieces to fit glovebox and climate controls, etc. Tippy, that is german squareweave from Lakewell.com . It is real nice. jac1976, I have had the car for 34 years. That carpeted dash cover dates back to the mid- 1990s after I put on a new dash. I don't recall, but it could have come from Mid-America at the time. It is velcro'd on in a few places with small dots. I like it because there is very little, if any, reflection of the dash on the windshield. |

Anyone modified the Rennline piece to keep the glovebox? I have a Rennline dash I haven't installed yet. I like the simple look of it, but I drive my car to work and need a place to put my stuff (papers, sunglasses, phone, etc). With RS door panels, no center console, and no glove box there is no storage left..

I did something similar with the same piece. I just modified it to accept the stock knee pads. It looks a little more factory IMO.

CoryM, I found plenty of storage in the back seat deleted area or in the passenger seat. I used a small snap lid container for it. Much easier than getting into the glovebox and fishing around...just put the snap lid container in your lap.
Rodsrsr, well done! |
