Anybody Know John Truman

I am turning my car over to John this Saturday, he is reputed to be a master wrench in the Ohio region and formerly of Stoddards. John will be converting my already modified 3.4 930 to EFI utilizing motec, I can post the details of the build after he forms a baseline with dyno testing for the "Before" later next week. Your candor will be greatly appreciated.

I've met John several times, both at Stoddard in the late 70s and at various races around the midwest in the very early 80s where he was crewing for (I think) Stefan Edlis' 911 race car. John was reputed to be a top-notch engine builder; I had a friend who had the engines in both of his Porsches (a 76 930 and a 71 911T) rebuilt by John while he was at Stoddards during that time period. Both jobs were flawless and ran well for many years with no stories or excuses. As I recall he was a man of few words and great wisdom. Sorry, I don't have any recent data, but I thought you'd like some confirmation from more than 25 years ago. I'm glad to hear he's still at it.

I'm particularly interested to hear this because I'm doing an EFI conversion right now on my 78 930 (which involved a complete rebuild) and more than a few times during the process I've wondered how John would have done some of the things I've been doing. He's someone I looked up to long ago. Good luck with your project.

I am glad someone responded, I have heard the same about John and the quality of work he puts out.

Project Type 930

Engine
Stock crank, case, oil pump, etc.
Carrillo rods
3.4L pistons (final compression 8:1) retained
Cylinders and heads have Nirostat fire rings (provides sealing at 1.2bar boost)
930 heads ported with stock valve sizes, but smaller 993 valve stem diameter on inlet valve Valves were back cut for flow improvements
Twin plug with Bosch silver plugs W4CS
Aase springs and titanium retainers (pretty standard stuff)
GT2
Type 935 Individual Throttle bodies adapted to fit C2 Turbo Intercooler
Stock fuel rails, regulator, damper, etc, stock fuel pressure
BOSCH injectors, flow matched
Very nice full bay intercooler (Bob Holcombe) or C2 Turbo
B&B Headers retained
Fabspeed 4” Dual out exhaust
Imagine Auto’s HF2 Turbo
Tial BOV, Wastegate
MoTeC M48 Pro or M600
Wevo Mounts
Wevo Shifter

John also wants to play with the gear ratios.

All this could change as John will not have a baseline until the car has a leakdown, compression and "before" dyno testing. I will keep this car a long time so I don't mind spending to do it right. My next upgrade will be a Cessna T210N so no more toy cars.

Schnele,

Sidetracking a bit from your original question...

Sounds like you have a serious project on your hands. Did you do all the mods up to this point (the internal stuff) and you're now turning it over to John for the finish work and tuning? Have you run it yet with the individual throttle bodies? I'd like to see pictures of that setup. Maybe you've posted them elsewhere and can refer me to them.

Also, where did you source the W4CS plugs?

Rob, the car currently has the 3.4 andial P&C apart from that the internals are pretty stock with the exception of the SC330 cams and K27 turbo. The above list is the intended path, I can provide John's number if you need it.

Here is another thumbs up for John. Never had him work on any of my stuff, but I have seen examples of his work. This includes a very nice 962 that can be found at his place very often. He is a very smart man with very good knowlege. Good guy to go to for the performance side.

John Truman

I dropped my '75 911s to John in June, waiting to see the results of his magic. Major complaint was broken head studs, but several other issues including exhaust, electric, suspension. I spoke with John a few weeks ago he informed me the motor had been built using parts/pieces from several different motors, I am sure John will make it right. Car is rock solid with 0 rust and just plain good looking, from Idaho 68k miles.
In my opinion the mid '70s 911's are the most attractive. we also have an '87 turbo cab which could be classified as sexy, but some of us are old and well ....

I was very impressed with John and his workshop.

Hope to report soon with the results.

John did some of the work on the rebuild of my 2.7 with conversion to Webers & RS P&Cs way back in 1987. I think he was still with Stoddards at the time. He was the go-to guru for 911 engines in the area.

I'm pleased to say the 2.7 has run perfectly ever since, and has not leaked a drop of oil in 30+ years!

Talked to my Canton dentist pal last night. Mid 60's (age). He had his 72 E converted from MI to Webers by John at Stoddard 75-ish. He also asked, "Do you remember that 951 transmission you helped me put in a few years back? That was a Truman rebuild."

Never met the man but interesting for most any Porsche nut there's only one degree of separation. Especially for oldster Porsche nuts.

interesting zombie thread revival.

have met the OP, and I don't think he frequents the forums any more. I do know that his experience with the shop in question went sideways. a pretty sad story with multiple chapters.

Yes, I, too am aware of the disaster that ensued for the OP. I retract my endorsement (which was based on experiences that are now 40 years in the past), until there is sufficient data to redeem it.
