Daily drive a 911sc
Im just curious. Is there anyone on here that daily drives their older air-cooled 911? I want to daily drive a 911sc (or a 993 for that matter) one day but wanted to know how reliable they would be as a daily driver?
Thanks all in advance! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If the maintenance is 100% up to date, it should be pretty easy to daily an SC. Much easier than a 944. Winters would probably be tough. Also 993s and 911scs are very different cars. You probably should drive a few first.

I have daily driven both. 993 has more creature comforts and more refined plus AC worked. Both but very doable.

I daily drove mine for years in the summer when I first got it. Really the only hard part is that their value keeps going up and you get nervous about door dings and accidents.

I bet many people in the late 70s early 80s daily drove them
![]() As you've likely, frequently read here. The more these cars are driven, the happier they are. I personally would love to daily mine but that 30k mi/yr sales job is a real pest

Yeah reliability is not the issue, the cars are tanks. Of course you'll have an occasional issue to troubleshoot and repair, but my '84 has been more reliable than my '07 daily driver, which has fewer miles on it. I try to take mine on regular car duty once a month or so and an amazed at how solid and well built it feels. Road trips halfway across the country on the open freeway are a joy. The fact that high mileage doesn't reduce the value of these things is a big tell, especially when 20k miles on a similar vintage Ferrari tanks the value.
However, even if you didn't care about value, there's still the issue of noise, comfort, lack of AC, and most important to me as I get older, crash safety. Too many people driving while Facebooking these days.

It's a must - drive mine regularly into work it is a very practical car. Great torque, built at the time to save gas, it is a great daily driver. Echo what others say about value - would not want to park mine next to a port overnight.

I only park mine when there is salt on the roads. And I've done some good road trips. I'll be doing another road trip in a couple months (Pittsburgh to St Louis to Central FL then back to Pittsburgh)

Reliable? The newest SC is 35 years old so anything can happen. They require some amount of human intervention every 10-15K miles. The 993 is much more like a modern car.

Ummm...Porsche has never been interested in any sort of racing that is not endurance racing. A significant proportion of SCs have hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock. Properly-maintained SCs are as reliable as a hammer. And a lot more fun to drive.

I drive my SC probably 3-4 days a week whenever there's no salt on the road (Nov-Mar here in OH usually).

I drive mine quite frequently, not everyday because I don't work during the summer. But I do put on frequent trips (2-3 times a week) of 70-100 miles..
It always starts, it always gets me home.. If you have a backup vehicle if and when problems arise - you should be fine. Drive the heck out of it..

Yep, good cars but nothing lasts forever. Its not crazy to consider that many are rolling around with all manner of deferred maintenance piling up. I realize that many guys here maintain to the hilt but there are a lot more cars out there...

For you high milers consider learning to predict what might fail next. For example, learning to perform an amp draw test on your fuel pump can tell you how much life it might have left, etc.

Daily drove my 1980 SC for 10 years. 70K miles. Only stopped recently because I had a spare beater car dropped in my lap.
I do my own work, it would have bankrupted me if I needed a shop to do all of the little things that came up. Ended up having it down for a month for an engine rebuild (which I did), then for 2 weeks for a tranny rebuild (which I did), and everything else has been long weekend fixes. Probably, oh, 4 months total over 10 years that the car was un-drivable.

Drive it every chance I get, at least 3-4 times a week. Had to tow home once shortly after I bought it (2007) due to a bad fuel line (rubber ones that goes from back of tunnel to engine). I don't worry about long trips but having AAA+ is a good thing to have just in case. If the car is sorted, I would not worry about reliability.

Every time I drive my car, it's an event. And I have a lot of events in my life!
I have a friend with a newer car, a 997, I think. He limits himself to driving it twice a week to keep it special. I don't understand that guy. I'd drive.

I daily drove my 1983 Targa for about 5 years or so. This was 17 years ago though.
The car did great. The more you drive it, the better it runs ! |
