Loud noise while starting

Just an odd noise. Sometimes when I start my car it starts just st fine but there is a loud noise and vibration right after! It is a loud whirring noise. Then it goes away and maybe it will not do it again for several days! Or it will do it two times in a row. I think the starter. What do you think?

My starter used to make a ton of noise at times. Had to shim it to fix, sounded awful.

Nick... If it's anything at all like a bell-whirring... could be cooling fan making contact with housing. Mine would this strange noise sometimes on startup and not at others. And... it would go away. Sometimes loud sometimes not so. Vibration... that I do not recall. Can look at engine running and here this sound and inspecting the engine... it's a mystery. This is because contact was on top inside of housing with rear of blades being affected, so rather invisible (unless specifically looking for this.) Need mirror to look up into housing. Friction eventually burns the fan's blade tips so the blades progressively deteriorate. If this is indeed what's occurring, if caught soon... only new housing is needed.

Thank you! It is always something!!! Does it only once in a while. Pretty loud. With the vibration. Car starts right up . Every time! Car is only 32 years old . Should not do this until 40 years old ! I was wondering if the dizzy could make this noise? I did oil
It recently.

I had this EXACT problem....random loud grinding noise at start. Finally took the rebuilt Bosch starter off and saw a chewed up "ring" loose in the area of the pinion gear! This had been happening almost from installing the new "rebuilt" starter. Went with new lightweight starter from Pelican and no problems. Don't buy rebuilt starter, long history of poor quality.

Post a sound clip or video Nick :-)

My guess would be your starter isn't disengaging properly.

Nick Triesch 08-03-2018 02:07 PM

Ok. I’ll try to record but only does it once in a while ! What happens is that it wil start right up then immediately , will make the Loud grind noise! But I can start 10 times with no sound and then it does it . But sometimes it will do it twice in a row . I’ll have my phone ready!

Nick Triesch 08-03-2018 06:39 PM

It happens a second after starting. When it does it.

DRACO A5OG 08-03-2018 08:12 PM

hmm, it sounds like solenoid is sticking open and grinding on the flywheel ring gear.

When was the last time Starter was serviced or rebuilt?

You may want to remove the start and take a look at the sprocket for wear. You can also bench test it to see if the gear seats back after activation.

Yes Jim, 32 year old starter . About 5 years ago it stuck in heat in the mountains . I had to
Push start. When I got it home I tapped it with a ball peen and then cleaned all wires and contacts. Was fine for several years. So you are right, Maybe time to replace the starter .

DRACO A5OG 08-04-2018 11:08 AM

Have it rebuilt or opt for a Hi-Torque brand HIgh TOrque Starter, Will not have heat issues :-)

OK thanks. Yup, a hot day will affect it. Terrible weather right now to drive . My car is black on black with normal ac. Takes some fun out of driving.
