Outer CV Boot Replacement - HELP! :)
Hi all,
I had a large split in my rear-right-outer CV Boot. I was able to get the axle off and I cut the remaining boot off so I could assess the situation. I notice that the brass/goldish colored coupling that the boot fit over does not seem perfectly round. It actually appears that the axle rod has bent it out of shape/round. (see photo) I'm pretty sure this is not normal correct? And if this is not normal what do I order to replace? I'm assuming I can just order an entire outer CV and not have to replace the entire axle? I already ordered/received an outer CV boot kit, but it's just the rubber boot, grease and clamps. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534120621.jpg |
What year is your car? I think on the Carreras and possibly SCs, the outer CV is not user replaceable.
You might still try just replacing the boot if you were so inclined. Don't know if it'll work, but is your other option is replacing the entire axle, what have you got to lose except for the boot cost? |
Tap it back round with a small hammer.

It's an '87 911 coupe. I guess I just have to remove/rebuild the inner CV boot as well in order to get the new outer boot back on the axle rod. More work, but a lot less expensive than purchasing a completely new axle assembly. |
Hi, I just redid the CV joints on mine and the brass piece was also out of round. If you inspect it, you will see that it is just there as a support for the rubber boot. It does not have to be perfect, just round enough so that the boot makes a good, tight joint. I used a peen hammer, along with whatever was on hand as a small dolly, to tap it back to near round. Nothing to worry about.
good luck, |
jclanan & ALL, The bent axle boot flange is caused by someone rolling the car around with the axle disconnected. We made a special tool to hang the axles when the trans is removed. Beginning 1987 (G50) the outer axle c.v. joint was installed using a "friction welding" technique. Basically non- removable. (to CanadaKev, ALL 1986 and earlier models had removable c.v.'s). Chances are that the boot split because of the bent flange, so it is very important to get it as close to round as possible. Also the color is a Gold Cad or Yellow Cad plating. It is steel underneath, not brass.

Not meaning to disparage a pro Porsche guy, but the "friction welded" CV joints started with the 1985 1/2 911 with 915 transaxle. Also the axle is larger and uses 110mm tranny output flanges and inner CV. |
Thanks for the informatin re: fixed CV joint axles years. Either of those time frames is closer than the foggy data I had rattling around my brain. But I was certain they started that in the later G body cars and your info confirms and makes it more accurate.

desirable to folks doing a 3.6 upgrade. Ergo, the 110mm 915 tranny output flanges have become "rare as hen's teeth" because they were only used from '85 1/2 thru '86 and now go for stupid money. I lucked out and got the axles and flanges for my 3.6 upgrade years ago ('92) when they were cheap. |
