What exhaust / header for a 72 2.4MFI? I don't need the heat (live in FL) and would like to update the system. Don't want noisy/droney, just a nice sound and a few bhp... anyone out there have any suggestions?

I hate to include a shameless plug but.... I would get a set of equal length headers and a twin in/out muffler. You can get pipes straight out the back or one on either side. As it turns out i have a set of just this type of header! Imagine that! 40mm I.D. equal length, just blasted and coated with POR high temp. Seriously though, this is the same setup i have on my car, also MFI, and it sounds great. Heres a pic.
The only thing you run into with this set up is you no longer have the pre-heat hose going to the pump to ritchen the mixture at cold-start. As with the heat, cold-start is not a problem that you face. I removed my thermostat and added a plate with a screw in the middle for an externel adjustment. Works nicely. Who manufactured the headers you have, are they Bursch units? Did it make much difference to the car? |

Honestly i don't know who the manufacturer is because i bought them second hand. They are indentical to the AJ-USA headers i have on my car now, mine are just bigger. I bought these to run the car with both sets and see what the power difference would be. Unless you had SSI heat exchangers, I think that this would be a vast improvement over stock. I have the headers i mentioned and the AJ-USA sport muffler with twin pipes out the back. Bursch makes a different style header than this. I would call thees RSR headers because of the way the pipes are bent and curve up behind the motor. Also these have adaptors for the stock muffler that can be removed if you ever decided to run megaphones. Bursch headers are flat beneath the car, and the piping goes all the way to the muffler. I dont know enough about exhaust flow to say what the different effects on flow would be from one to the other. Paul |

Looks like you experimented with the exhaust thing...
The headers you have on your car, are they a larger internal dimension than 40mm? Are you using these on a standard 2.2 MFI or has your engine been 'tickled'? You obviously preferred the larger dimension header, did they perform or sound better? If the headers taking up much needed space in your garage and I might be interested in buying them if they were for sale... I have a standard muffler at the moment so would need the adapters if you have them. Thanks for all your feedback, Nigel |

"Tickled" is an understatement. My car has a dual-plug 3.5. My headers are 48mm or 1 7/8" the ones in the picture are 40mm or about 1.5". The tubes past the collectors in the pic are the adaptors for a standard muffler. I considered using these to see if i got a bump in torque. I lost interest in messing with it and am going to sell them.
