good bye 3.6 hello 3.3 turbo
My 3.6 was sold today and to a good home. A nice 73 rs replica from illionois. My car will now be in the transition to a 3.3 turbo.
I had alot of fun with it , but turbo power is my DESTINY I will go for a mild one, no more than 400hp. A turbo in a 911sc will be a nice sleeper. A couple rides in a Turbo did me in. Q-1 . I am rebuilding my 915 trans and adding a limited slip. will it handle it. Some say YES some say NO. I dont want it exotic with oil coolers and spray bars. Q-2 . Should I put in the 930 trans. Some say it is a direct bolt in some say i will have to cut bellhousing of torsion tube. Q3 . lite flywheel or stock for 915 trans. What about clutch. Q-4 Pricing Can I get a complete harness to exhaust for under $7K with decent mileage. Can I get a "930 engine in pieces" for under $3k. I know you must take every deal seperately, but a ballpark figure would be nice. Thank You |

IMO, a 915 is not a great tranny for the power characteristics of a Turbo. People knock the 4-speed turbo box -- but it's ideally set up to let the boost loose. Long tall gears are what you want with that kind of a motor.
But I've got very limited experience with Turbos, so hopefully the hp junkies will jump in. |
I don't think the 915 will handle 400 hp for long. I don't think the shortened 930 will fit. I think you have to move the motor back a little. If you get a early 930 tranny it might fit but I am not sure. I think you can get a 3.3L for about $8.5k I would go to Kennedy Eng. Prod. for the clutch

I had a 915 with the C2T engine in my car, with no problems. There are very many high HP (400) cars running 915s. I dont know how that rumor got started that it wont handle it. Now, when you get up into the 500s, you will need to get the stiffening mid plate and axle carriers and you will be fine.

I dumped my 2.2e/901 in favor for a 3.3/915lsd and it's been awesome. I'm repairing headstuds on the motor now but when in use, it was amazing.
I have a 915 w/ZF lsd and sachs sport clutch set up. Unless you really beat the hell out of it, it'll be fine. Rarlyl8 and John Walker have similar projects to the one you've proposed w/ more mileage than mine. They could be a good resource. As for the harness, I re-pinned the original engine plug and modifed 3 or so wires and was on my way. You should not have to replace the harness. Good luck with it. Rich |
The 915 will be fine for for most turbo applications in terms of strength up to 300+ HP. 400 would be pushing things. I have no plans to change mine and its lasted 20+ years with the turbo and is getting its first rebuild right now - 2nd synchc out - what else!
I did not change my clutch when the turbo went in because I don't believe in fixing what isn't broke. So it then lasted 20+ years. I am now putting in the Sachs Power Clutch Kit from Pelican right now. If you have to repair the transmission, then update the clutch at the same time. I resurfaced the flywheel but no "light" flywheel. The 915 is not geared particularly well for the turbo. 1st gear is entirely too short so you must be quite careful of the 1-2 shift points. After you are out of 1st, third gear is great and fourth is a litle too long. But agin - I don't fix what isn't broke so even on my 915 rebuild I am not changing gears. I don't race the car - except an occasional opportunity to bury "ricers", BMWs etc. |
It isn't horsepower that hurts the 915, it's torque and heat.

TQ to 350 will be fine, 450 would be pushing things and I'm not sure why it would get any hotter with the turbo if your driving style stays essentially the same.

If you are worried about the torque and heat of the turbo engine on your 915 gearbox, why not go for a G50?

For about $10K you get the 3.6 in an early car, if you do the work yourself. Add the extra cost of a turbo motor to that and you should be in the ballpark. I'll gestimate $12-13K using the 915 trans. I would also go with the G50 with a shortened bellhousing for another $3-4K.

The modded 3.3T has been up and running in the SC for many months now with no problems.
IMHO the 915 is perfect gearing for my driving habbits. Dirt bike like excelleration in every gear. Will it last? We'll see. |
You would have a much more dependable
car if you go with the 930 gear box. Centerforce clutches work best for me, I went through several Sacks clutches. If you can get a complete 3.3 in pieces for $3k, take it to a good P-shop they can build you a 400Hp motor for $4k.(fresh 3.3 for $7k) A 930 trans. can be had for about $2,500.00, I think there's one in the forum used parts classified. About $1,200.00 to rebuild the trans. (if needed) $800.00 new clutch. Total - $11,500.00 (fresh motor,trans,clutch) Good luck!!! |
When I put the 930 motor in my SC I used a stock 915 clutch. It didn't last 8k miles. If I kept the 915 I would have gone with a Kennedy clutch. I think they are good for 370 ft lbs of torque. I can't remember exactly. The G50 swap is a lot of work, as I am finding out right now. It is going to cost over $4k for the swap. Now I see why they quote $7k for the job. I really liked the 915 gearing with the turbo.

Used all 930 parts for the install.
915 clutch was a Sachs Sport unit. I like it. |
Nope I made my own lines. I did put in the rear fuel pump and overboost protection. I ran a line to the top of the oil tank for the turbo return line

Hey 915 guys, do you use 1st gear at all? I never get much use out of it, even with a stock motor.
