Broken tachometer and finding a replacement

Hi all

I had an overvolting voltage regulator that cooked my tachometer, I then broke it beyond repair while trying to repair it  . So I'm in the market for a new tach and have been offered one from an 86 911, my car is an 81 911 SC.

I've been looking all over the internet to check if this tach will work in my car and have found a whole thread about tachometer compatability on this forum. This thread says the CDI in my SC and the motronic from an 86 use the same signal so do I take that it will work in my car or is there more to it?

Thanks in advance

It works. I use a SC tach on my 914-6, 3.2 conversion. No shift light but I think the earlier tachs look better.

Maybe you can send yours out for repair?

No problem, used the original tach in my '81SC with both a 3.2 and later
a 3.6 motor transplant. Worked perfect!

I maybe could but I'm sure it would cost more than replacing it. I broke the mechanical bit inside when trying to get the needle off.

Thanks for the replys everyone and even though im doing the opposite to what you lot have done and will be using a 3.2 gauge in a 3.0 I guess if its compatible one way it will be the other.
