How to properly seal the smugglers box?
 

I borrowed this pic from Eric Lind because there you see the foam around the steering column from factory (green circle).
Mine is missing and I have terrible venting into the frunk.
Is this the only way avoiding bad air?

Regarding the yellow circle area, any body ever cut it down to block it? Method of how to?
Right now mine is just taped shut. But as it intrudes the box it obstructs space for stuff to place inside.

The yellow area, I believe I used a rubber cap that’s available here in the US for capping plumbing connections. I believe the one I found fit the outside dimension of the existing connection, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t put a similar plastic or rubbing plumbing cap on the inside of port, and shorten it if you desire to store items in the smugglers box.

Yes, that’s the common method. I want to go beyond that, as explained above.

Though my main issue ist the sealing around the column.

Curious what they effect of the "bad air" is.... noise? - pretty sure I can see the ground out the bottom of my smugglers box (on the non-ac 85 at least). It's not a quiet car :)

exactly... at about 70kmh onwards the air penetrating compresses with such force in the box that it searches its way through the frunk into the compartment and it whistles in various areas... nothing in the dash is airtight.

And yes, I have no door seal issue or similar.... we made a vapor test whilst driving.

I've often wondered about that. My 85 makes so much wind noise I don't know where to start! Or, in fact, if I should even bother! I'll have to seal it up and see if it's an improvement.

I did block off the AC duct (the round hole you circled) with duct tape :) the car is, after all, a beater....

Are you sure that area is the air source? Use painters tape to seal the smugglers box lid, then road test to confirm.

I’m guessing it’s your trunk seal. It’s in a high pressure area. Repeat with tape around its perimeter. It could just be a matter of adjusting the trunk latch to increase contact with the weatherstripping or maybe the rubber is no longer pliable,

Sherwood, hood seal is new and hood aligned. Taped testdrive (incl doors, windowframe) didn’t change anything.
This giant hole in the box is absolutely obvious.

Guess I solved it this way....
