Normal shift knob wear?

I'm talking to a guy about a 911 that's mileage exempt...claims it has 50k miles but the gear shift looks a tough for only having 50k miles. Do we think this is normal for an '88 cab with 50k miles or is there something to be suspicious about?

Cheers!

Funny that.

People are quite different about their level of hand care, even having different levels of acidity in their oils....ewww! I’ve seen originals with 100k that looked perfect and some pretty haggard at 25k. Try and use other indicators along with this shift knob wear to confirm true mileage.

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

Not bad for 50K. My 68K is in much worse shape.

But then as they say, it's the mileage not the miles !

Looks OK to me - some people just grip the things harder. I've seen low-mileage cars with remarkably worn shift knobs, and I have a car with 220k and 25 years on it where I can still read the embossed shift pattern on the leather.

There are better tell tale signs than a knob to check for a claimed low milage vehicle. Is the windshield sparkly in the sun from miles and miles of getting sand blasted? Does the filler neck show the wear of a thousand of fill ups? Are the pedals worn to metal? does the driver's seat seem extra tired? the shift knob might simply be showing abnormal wear from over excitement :^)

My knob is exactly like yours (same color) but with more miles and wear. I'm planning to send it to get recovered. I tried to buy one from the Porsche dealer but it came in a non-matching color.

Apologies, forgot to thank everyone for their input! Sounded like this wasn't out of the question and the seats looked good too (assuming they weren't re-upholstered).

I just got the PPI back and we're good to go! The service records showed a consistent history too so I'm a soon-to-be owner of an '88 cab

Thanks again!

what does the pedal rubber look like?

there was this story when I was a kid about a girl who was given a Spanish fly and she wore a shift nob out while the parking brake was on....
