Insurance for an older 911
Just bought my 1st 911. It's a '76 with a 3.0 motor in it. I'm very happy and I can't wait to get it out on the road.
My wife, god bless her, is less than happy. She spent the better part of her day off today wrangling with our insurance broker. It seems that comprehensive coverage is going to be nearly impossible, and if possible they would value the car at only $3500-5000. This car will be my daily driver, and my commute is <20miles each way. Help! Any thoughts or recommendations? I would really like to have full insurance on this car, so it doesn't meet the fate of my 944. (Repeated hit-and-runs when parked have left the drivers side with more $ in body damage than it is worth!) I live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California.

My suggestion...buy a "junqucar" for the daily commute...insure your 911 under a collector car policy. These policies have strict driving terms, but comprehensive & liability costs are a lot less. This is merely passing on advice given to me by a body shop owner back in '69...when he was working on my less than 3 months old 912 that had it's driver's door and rear quarter smashed by a guy in a 4X4 pickup who didn't see my parked car as he backed up. No malice intended with the damage, but there it was. Made me wish I'd bought a piece of crap to drive to work & back. In an ideal world, we would be able to drive our Porsches unscathed, the only damage being the result of our own actions. Alas, this isn't an ideal world...

You have a couple of choices.
If you meet the requirements of the following you might be suprised. Hagertys or Grundys collector car insurance. Look them up on the web. In my case Grundys was cheaper however Hagertys has a local rep. and that means a lot to me. Good luck, David Duffield |

Also check with Their rates were 1/3 that of my regular carrier. Although, I don't know if they will cover a daily driver.

I've looked at Hagertys and it's great, unless they came out to check my "garage" is just an off-street parking spot.
I'll be looking at the others now. Thanks for all the very quick suggestions. As for driving a junk car to work... why would I want to spend that much of my life in something other than a Porsche?

Hi,
My Porsche is a "pleasure" car as my wife and I have a "beater" rides for shopping, taking the kids to school, looking for work etc. I added the P-car to my State Farm policy with an agreement to limit my miles to 7500 per year and no regular commuting to work. The cost was reasonable and when I inquired about the basis of the cost to set the comprehensive and collision coverage, their valuation agreed witht he data I got from numerous sources. In all, a fair deal.
