My 1969 911E barn find

So attached is the car I pulled out of a barn. Last driven in 1979. It is actually in amazing condition, all things considered. The owner left some rags and driving gloves inside the car. So luckily the mice went for the easy destruction of those items. The seats front and rear are almost flawless. I don't intend to replace any seals or do any type of new paint or major restoration. I'm going to have the mechanicals sorted out, and clean/wax the paint back the best it will do, which in test area's looks awesome. My question is this, should I lightly wet sand the rust area's to try and smooth them out some prior to a buff and wax? Or, should I simply buff away the oxidation, and wax? In area's of light rust, it is going down to metal, so I'm not sure if I want that look, or the rust instead. All opinions appreciated. Thanks!!!

I don't know enough yet to have a helpful opinion on your questions, but wow, that's a beaut!

Do you know what it was parked in '79? Noticed the Texas plates - where did you find it?

barn find

I purchased from the original owner. He bought it in Texas. He drove it until 1979, then towed it to Indiana. He removed the front bumper to fabricate a tow bar. That was still in place when I found the car. He kept every service receipt, sales brochures from the showroom floor, service manuals, workshop manuals, and best of all a log book of oil changes, fuel ups, plug changing. Pulled it out of the barn on my Birthday. So needless to say, best birthday ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would neutralize all the rust, touch it up, clay out the paint and drive it. I would not go full resto. You are going to have to spend serious money on the fuel system (all lines, tank, etc) which is going to cost you $5K.

What does neutralizing rust spots consist of doing. And what appearance does that leave you with. I do not want to use touch up paint I don’t believe it would match/look that good.

Great find. I agree, fix the necessities and drive it as a "survivor". Happy b-day!

I would carefully spot blast all those small little rust spots, or carefully sand them down to bare metal and then figure it out.

Is it original paint? If it is, it's worth weighing your options. If it's not original paint I would repaint it. If it is I would selectively fix areas so it looks presentable. It won't look awesome. It depends on what you want. You want a full resto? Paint is going to be from $5K to $15K or more. And then you have the fuel system, MFI, the rest of the stuff then you are in $30K more than purchase. Depends on what you want.

Paint is Metallic Green, not a common color. Paint is original with the exception of passenger front quarter panel. Two months into the ownership of car, he was hit on that quarter panel. I have the police report along with three estimates to repair. I wouldn’t even think of a repaint. Everything on this car is the way it left Stuttgart almost 50 years ago. I read about finds like this, but never thought I would land one. I left the barn covered in dirt and sweat and loved every minute of it

Great find! I would make it safe to drive as is and enjoy it. It's only original once, so resist the urge to tear it apart.
