fuel line fix impossible: stop me before I shoot the car

1986 911 fuel line replacement. This is the fuel line that comes from the fuel filter; travels under the fuel injection; then tee's just behind the fan housing and runs of to each fuel manifold/ log.

Question: is it required to remove all the fuel injection components to get to the fuel line to replace it ?

It is a real pill to do.
With the engine out I did things backwards and installed the intake manifold BEFORE installing the fuel line... and I wanted to kick myself in the butt.
I can't even imagine doing it with the engine in.
Best of luck!

I replaced those fuel lines with the engine installed. I took everything off (cleaned and inspected all other items while I was in there), and then put everything back. It was very rewarding and not that bad, just take your time. BUT, be careful when taking off the intake that nothing drops into the intake valves.

I did my '85 about about a year ago, but I took everything off from the jugs up cause I wanted to replace my intake gaskets, all the hoses in front and do the TOD-you don't need to do that just for the lines. You do need to replace all of them though-if one failed the others probably aren't far behind.

Griffiths has good insight here: https://griffiths.com/porsche/engine/porsche-911-fuel-lines/

Get a mechanics mirror, a magnet stick, a headband light, gardner's foam kneeling pads and some of those sleeves the basketball players wear on their arms-they save lots of skin!

You might want to consider pulling your injectors too and having them cleaned and rebuilt. InjectorRX did mine and cleaned my throttle body too. I picked up 20% on 2 injectors and 13% on the other 4. I can feel it, too. About $130 as I recall, dropped off & picked up by me.

Going back in torque your left side intake nuts too if you only remove the right side.

+1 on care not to drop things in the intake ports. Vacuum debris as you get parts out of the way, you'll be surprised what might have accumulated over the years: screws, nuts (organic and non), washers, leaves, twigs, etc. Patience and care here are paramount.

With the engine in place, it may not be required to remove the FI components to replace the fuel lines between the filter and the fuel rail/engine intake... however it depends at least in part on what you are replacing the lines with. For example on my 3.2, I first removed the blower motor and ducting, this created enough space to see/feel the original hard lines. I then used sheet metal cutters to hack the original hard lines out and then replaced with a flexible T shaped fuel line made by Len (boxterGT). If I had been replacing with hard lines, pretty sure it would have been required to remove the FI components. I could not remove the original hard lines except by cutting into a few smaller pieces. Not elegant but it worked...

+1 on what shawn908 mentioned. I purchased ALL the flexible fuel lines for the entire car from Len and was able to install them on my 86 without removing the engine or intake manifolds or FI components. I did remove airbox, MAF, and heater blower and duct so as to make more room and clean things up while in there. Patience is required for the entire process!

Also Rather than using sheet metal cutters, use a clean sharp utility knife or single edge razor,, once all three fittings have been disconnected, and cut the hoses two hoses as close to the metal tee. If you take your time you can position the original tee line as needed to cut the rubber hoses and get it out, I was successful.
