Here is a topic for good discussion.
I have a 77 Targa wide body, with a 78 3.0 motor. Motor is fresh, just rebuilt and is a great car. spent last 8 years on her. No problems and she run great. I just purchased a 80 SC Coupe RoW. its a thrasher, but for the price, I couldn't go wrong. I was thinking a great track car. delima: Once I start to track the Coupe, I am gonna want tires, brakes, HP, lightness, etc. I don't need the extra expense. there are many parts off the Coupe I can use on the Targa. and probably just Track the Targa......but I hope I don't wreck my prize posession. The SC engine is strong and the tranny is smooth. The body needs some work, but is very manageable. Shall I take what I need and part the car for a profit, or track it, or part it out, or???? Just thought I would get some fresh ideas. |

I think this is a judgement call on your behalf. It seems like the sensible thing to do is turn the 80 into a track car since it is a coupe, and you can go hog wild on the mods without worrying about streetability (crazy camber, light, less durable (f/g parts), hot, uncomfortable, stiff, etc...) and still have a "civilized" car to drive the rest of the time. This way too you won't hurt your baby on the track, and if something unfortunate happens like the infamous money shift you still have your baby to tool around in while you fix the track car. THe problem with this is the cost probably goes much higher than if having just the one car and compromising for dual purpose.

What a dilema... Two P-Cars!! I wish I had your problems.. Keep your prize possesion and Gut the 80 coupe set it up as strictly a track car.. Steve is making allot of sense to me..and besides it's a ROW More horse power too..

Do you have much track experience? If not, try it for a while before you build a "race car". I just hate to see another 911 gutted/ruined.

Hey, Thanks fellow Pelcans....
No, I don't have much track, lots of strip from my Bug days. I will try to put my stuff with the coupe and then decide. keep in touch, I may have an SC to part out. |

Why part the car? I'm sure you could sell it for say $7,000 pretty easily. I think you paid $5500 for it, so that would still give you a profit, and it would leave one more car in the pool of functional 911's.
Of course you can do what you want, it's your car, I just like old 911's and I hate to see a running, complete one destroyed. They make good parts-cars after they've been wrecked. Rob 1980SC |

Jbabic,
I have a '77 targa widebody 3.0. In a perfect world all Pelicans would have two p-cars, one for street and one for track use. And we could afford to buy whatever parts we needed for them. Building the coupé into a track-only car must be tempting, but it will cost a lot of money. I would put that money into the targa to build one great car instead of two good ones. You will have to compromise the street-/trackability, but on the other hand you can buy better parts and focus on only one car.

It's your car, but I don't think you should part it out solely for profit. One day these cars will be rare, and they are too cool not to share with future generations.

I actually live in California at the time...so no....but its tempting. Some more facts...I really don't need anything for the Targa...she is where Iwant her....not a show car, but presentable. I think I will Track the Targa...better brakes, tires, engine, reliability. If I get hooked, I will decide if I want to spend money on the coupe or just keep racing the Targa, and sell the coupe. I bought the coupe because the price was right, I wasn't going to lose money.
Again, thanks...I know, a good problem to have. |
