Broken steering column mount
Hello, thought I might share a recent repair of my ‘80 SC steering column mount. Making the transition into the esses at Road Atlanta, the column mount snapped creating the “swing-away” steering wheel reminiscent of the mid-sixties Lincoln and Thunderbird. A trakside attempt to weld the bracket failed. Probably because it looks to be a cast part.
I pulled the column out and knocked off the factory weld with a cold chisle. Then set out to find a solution. The obvious choice that came to my mind was a tube clamp. I found 1 5/8” roll bar clamp for ballast weight. To get the correct drop distance I added 1/4” x 1” steel bar. The clamp has a 1/2” x 16 thread for the ballast bolt. So I cut a piece of steel all thread the exact length and threaded the steel bar. I then spot welded the bar to the top of the all-thread and then drilled and tapped the mount holes for the tub.
