Tranny fluid

84 Carrerra, 5 spd, 109k

My wrench tells me that the PO put automatic tranny fluid in and that it could be a sign of pending issues with the tranny. He suggested leaving it.

I have been experiencing intermittent binding in 2nd and 4th gears. I don't think it's the tranny, no grinding or popping out of gear.

Would a change to Swepco hurt or help a "possible" ailing tranny?

Thx,
Scott

FWIW, I haven't heard any complaints about putting Swepco in a 915, although I'm sure someone will chime in here.

It helped my 915. One thing nice about it, you can't mistake if it's in there or not.

Scott,

I'm not sure if I'm understanding this right but you're saying that your tranny has plain automatic trans fluid in it rather than the correct weight fluid? I'm not sure that's a good thing and I certainly wouldn't leave it like that if that's the case. I have no idea what the comparison between automatic trans fluid and the correct fluid is but I didn't believe they're the same. Trans fluid isn't all that expensive compared to rebuild or replacement of gears etc... And your mechanic said to leave it in ?

He said leave the automatic tranmission fluid in!? What's next, add some sawdust? Did he strip the drain plug? Get some Swepco in there quickly. Lose the mechanic too.

Auto tranny fluid is used in some manual transmissions - Borg-Warner T-5 and T-56 for domestic products for instance. These are regualr transmissions not transaxles.

The problem you have is that ATF will not offer protection for a ring and pinion gear. Get some proper fluid in there (SWEPCO) ASAP.

I think everybody is in argeement on getting Swepco in and the ATF out.
You also should consider looking for a new mechanic.Check with your local PCA on recommendations. Good Luck !

You may want to put in some regular manual tranny fluid to flush the sytem out, then put in some swepco. This was suggested to me from this board and it worked out great!

Huey is right. Also, if the fluid was the red type (dextron or early Ford) you might want to check the seals on the main output shaft and the shifter rod to see if they have become soft.

We used to put dextron in the transmissions of old 2 cycle motorcycles when the seals were going bad because the fluid made the seals swell and you could get a few extra miles out of the engine without cracking the case.

The problem was that the dextron eventually sofened the seal.

My 2 cents.

And no I did not make all that stuff up

By all means ... flush the 915 with Castrol, Valvoline, or other SAE 85W-140 GL-5 gear oil before putting in Swepco! A week or so, up to 200 miles of driving ... to let all remnants of the ATF be mixed/replaced by the GL-5 in all of the nooks and crannies, etc.

I strongly suggest using Swepco 212 (which Pelican carries) multi-viscosity gear oil with moly! Your 915 needs the EP characteristics of the moly ... if there is any hope left for your transaxle!

Is 212 perferred over 201 for 915 gearboxes? I was getting ready to order 201 when I read your post.

Does PP carry this? I was just on the PP site trying to find it, and only found 201. Has anyone validated that 212 is better than 201? My car will be seeing a lot of track time this summer.

Hey Thom, Warren originally posted the recomendation for the 212. I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. I also want to hear the recommendations for 212 over 201.

Pelican carries the 212, I thing it was around $45/gal.

Are you sure it is ATF? It may be redline and the wrench is not up on it.

Just stick in some Valvoline 85W-90 for now. No use wasting your $40 a gallon $wepco on a tranny half filled with ATF.
