My 1980 911 SC project
 
Hey guys and gals,

My name is Dan and I live in The Netherlands. I just recently acquired this:

Iíve always dreamed of owning a 911 and last week that dream came true. Well, partly anyway, because as you can see itís still missing a few bits. Iím here to gain some knowledge and insight as I am new to wrenching on cars and new to Porsches in general.

My BIL who lives down the street from me has a nice shop and restores Beetles and other aircooled VW cars, so I do have some good support around me to be able to take this on.

A bit about the car. Itís a 1980 911 SC originally delivered in Germany (where I bought it). Color code is 451 or Mocha Brown. Itís a bare shell including dashboard, steering column and wiring harness, but thatís pretty much it.

As you can see it was green for while and I am unsure of its complete history but hereís where we are now. As far as I can tell itís straight. The PO cleaned it up and itís pretty much rust-free, so thatís nice.

My goal for the car is to bring it back to its original color Mocha Brown (see front fenders). Iíd like to build it up as mostly stock or at least period correct for the model year. But I do have some thoughts on some subtle changes to make it mine, some that would be easily reversible if I or the next owner wants to bring it back to completely stock.

I like the outlaw look, but not over the top. Lower it a bit, all-black Fuchs wheels, maybe a ducktail. Flojo on here has a nice one that Iím digging the look of.

So I guess what Iím looking for is some advice on pretty much everything. I do not have an unlimited budget and would like to spend my money wisely, e.g. where it would make most sense to spend it.

Engine: Iím thinking about just finding a good 3.0, same as what originally would have come with it. If I can find a 3.2 for a really good price, I would consider it.

Transmission: I know a 915 was stock and that those had a few revisions along the way. Thoughts on that?

Suspension: I would like to lower it a bit from stock height. Whatís good here? Any input on CV joints or easy upgrades over stock?

Brakes: Same, need advice here. Stock or aftermarket?

Interior: Iím leaning towards a black interior. I do still want to find out what it came with from the factory.

Anything Iíve missed? Any advice in general? This car is basically a clean slate so lots of options here.

I appreciate any input and advice so thank you in advance!

Great start.
I believe your instincts. Mocha Black is my favorite Porsche color, and really works on the body of an SC. Its chunky enough in the rear to wear the color perfectly.

Again your motor instinct is correct for what a you want a streetable / quick Euro 3.0 Find a complete Euro 3.0 retain the injection. Add 964 cam, MSD mate it to stock 915, add SSI and sport muffler. Stock 7&8 or 9x16 Fuchs with a good tire. The car will look stock, make really good power. You will be very happy for not much $.

Lots of good suspension packages Rebel or Elephant street II. Looking forward to the progress. Good luck

Not sure if Iím ready to invest in cams and SSI but weíll see. Iíve got to sort the body and paint first. Will be stripping it down soon to get that process going.

Then once itís back from paint, suspension and axles Iím thinking.

Anyone have any suggestions on the order of work when building up from scratch? When the bodyís done, whatís next?

Too bad your in the Netherlands I have a 3.0 a 915 tranny, suspension et basically a whole 911 minus the shell. I'm going to be getting rid of it all soon but it's probably not cost effective to ship all that. Very ambitious build!!! Build it the way you want it.

Welcome! The car looks cool just sitting there missing all its bits. Piece by piece, and you'll have it back together one day before you know as long as you keep at it.

Congrats! This will be fun to watch while you bring her back to life. I'd focus on the body/paint.. and get that taken care of first then start buying up parts to bolt on. But of course if a good deal on suspension/engine/transmission/ext.. buy them up! Good luck! Also, I agree with getting a little outlaw/hotrod build :]

This could turn out to be very very expensive. But definitely a once in a lifetime build.

as far as what to prioritize for reassembly, i'm of three minds.

first would be to complete the suspension/wheels/brakes so it can be on the ground and support itself without a cart.

the second would be to sort the driveline (engine, trans, fuel system, etc) and then add the rolling gear after.

the third option is to buy based on what deals you find. you've got a long road ahead and it will add up very quickly. try to make a list of all the major components (and minor components!) you need and then search for the best deals...constantly. jump on the best deals and try to keep your total budget minimized. you'll still get to the finish line, but you'll spend the least. it just may take some awkward steps along the way.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It sure can turn out to be very expensive but Iím going to try and find deals as I go. Probably starting with suspension/brakes and keeping my eyes peeled for other smaller stuff.

Major expenses I will have to spread out over 2/3 years, so engine/trans, paint, and suspension/wheels/brakes.

Paint Iím going to farm out and it will most likely happen quite soon (already in the process of stripping the car for this). The paint shop will also fix any metal work and rust and then paint it in its original Mocha Brown (451).

After that suspension/wheels/brakes. In the mean time Iíll keep my eyes open for engine/trans but because the biggest chunk of costs will go here I might have to wait until year 2/3 until I can afford a decent engine and trans.

Most of us before owning our first 911 had some what day dreamed of having one. There were so many stories about how people found and bought his/hers very first 911. I donít know your experience or background regarding Porsche restoration, but the way you are doing it is going to be very expensive and time consuming. If you think you are saving a lot of money by buying this empty roller, you were ill advised.

By the time you accumulated the needed parts to complete your project, you would be better off buying a complete non-running car. Unless you could source cheap parts in Europe which I doubt, you are in a very slippery slope to reach your final goal. Wish you the best.

Thank you Tony. Iím absolutely aware this will not be the most cost-effective way of getting to own and drive a 911. Half of the joy for me is the way of getting there and in this case that is getting to restore and build my own car. Iíve long wanted to work on cars and the 911 being my absolute favourite, I couldnít let this pretty much empty shell go and picked it up.

Before this I had picked up a pretty much complete but not running 914 and had planned on restoring that first. But as soon as I saw this one I knew my heart wasnít truly in it and needed the 911. The 914 is up for sale now.

4831 non US 1980 911 SC's were built. Slight bit less that year for US version.
915/62 as compared to the U.S. version being 915/63

Was able to put in a good couple of hours here and there over the past few weeks. Stripped the dash and frunk.

Plan is to clean that all up, tie up the wire harness and spray a fresh coat of body schutz. Also might have to clean the black stuff off the bottom and inside the fenders before Iím able to send it off for metal work and paint.

not sure, but I think that plate is a reinforcing for the mirror mount.
