please identify this part

Hello, could someone please identify this part on my 1983 911 SC RHD coupe.
Large black bracket in the passenger foot well. Reason is that i am ordering some new mats and a previous owner has cut the old mat to fit around this bracket and i want to get my measurements on the new mats spot on. Thanks.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538580374.jpg

better angle on the bracket ??

in the LHD I think that's the small loop where the mat goes over to tie it down. Could the bracket have been added ?
id be more concerned about the massive slice for the wiring loom below it.

hi, thanks for your reply. its the large angled with the cable tie at the top i am wondering about. its a very solid piece. wires are for a radio that was fitted before my time.

Davidjboyd 10-03-2018 08:19 AM

ah those two thick wires are for a battery cut off switch also fitted before my time

Clearer photo minus the carpet. Any ideas what this large black metal pipe(?) is.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538584651.jpg

Looks like a piece of conduit painted black. Have you scraped away any paint?

Davidjboyd 10-03-2018 09:46 AM

Thanks. its a very solid piece coming through the floor and mounted under the dash. a vent? a drain?

911 Rod 10-03-2018 09:47 AM

Looks like it's even spot welded in.
Nothing inside it?
Almost looks factory the way the floor board is cut out.

if this is a rhd it is possible that this is your brake booster feed from the engine...

i cant seem to find any other photos of SC's with that pipe? unless they are hidden behind their carpets.

Davidjboyd 10-03-2018 10:10 AM

thanks guys, yes it does look factory, not some random placement. could be a brake booster feed?
quite thick thought.

Can you see where it comes out in the front trunk?

Davidjboyd 10-03-2018 10:47 AM

ive worked it out! its the water drain pipe. i looked underneath the car and saw the pipe emerge, then poured water down the vent by the wipers and the water appeared on the floor via that pipe.
Thanks for all your help.

This is one of the most f##ed up things I've ever seen if it is factory.

You need to cut your floor mat. Geeez.

We all like to think of Porsche as the quintessential German engineers, and mostly they are. BUT........

Back in the era of the SC Ernst Fuhrmann ran the place. He HATED the 911, and wanted to kill it and replace it with the 928. He had a big meeting and told all the department heads that he would not allow and R&D or money to be spent on improving the 911, and as soon as sales slowed down, it would go away.

Only because Peter Schutz came along and replaced Fuhmann did the 911 live a long life that continues today. Even with that, until the 993 came along did a total redesign happen. Look at the idiotic way the front AC condenser fan was added, with no fuse of any sort. Or the instruments with no fuses, and the goofy wiper delay being a separate knob on the dash.

What other car on the planet could run the AC, heat and fresh air system all at once. They are three individual and separate systems.
