Installing G50 into 1969 911/912. Need advice on work in tunnel
Hello,
I'm in the process of restoring and converting a 1969 912 to a 911. I'm planning on installing a G50 transmission. In the next week, I will be replacing the floor pans (using Restoration Design products) and have the perfect opportunity to install the necessary hydraulic line into the central tunnel. I'm looking for advice and possibly pictures on the best way to do this. Thank you. |
I am in the process of putting a 3.6 / G50 into a 73.
My plan is to use the central tunnel and transmission mount portion of 993 tunnel and graft it into the 73 tub. Besides the extra "dome" for the trans nosecone, the trans mount threaded bungs are in the correct location, and the 993 G50 shifter is also in the correct location. The extra section of the center tunnel can only help stiffen the chassis. It is a bunch of work but as you note you are already in there doing the floors. If you are just doing the minimum, then it is not much to increase the dome area. You will then need to find a G50 Carrera 3.2 shifter mechanism. The hydraulic pedal box is the easiest part. |

I finally have a car with a decent 915 and I actually kind of agree with the comment above. Maybe try to find and drive a car with a perfect 915 and decide if it’s really worth all that effort. Owning both gear boxes, I wouldn’t do a conversion.

For all the effort, you don't gain much. Bragging rights perhaps.

Yea, unless you are going for LOTS of HP, a 915 is just fine. It you are putting in a 930 engine with lots of mods, then the G50 makes sense.

Thank you for all your comments. I must confess to having been temporarily blinded by the thought of a G50 for no particularly good reason.
The engine I put in will most likely have between 250 and 300 hp with 200 - 240 ft/lbs of torque. I’m sure a 915 will be perfectly adequate. The team at Patrick Motorsports has advised me of the same thing. Good people. |
BTDT, I needed to do a G50 swap for hp reasons but for what you are anticipating...build a really nice LSD 915. They don’t shift as nice as a 901 but neither does a G50.
