Fan housing cracks

R&R'ing the alternator in my 88 Carrera and found these cracks in the housing. It feels solid but looks bad with cracks in 3 of the 4 louvers. Having trouble finding one online. Pelican lists it as no longer available. Can it be welded? Any advice much appreciated. JL

The magnesium can be welded, but I don't recommend it since it will probably crack again in short order. I went with a Vertex housing.

My old '88 had the same cracks, but not quite as bad. I guess I got lucky and was able to buy the Porsche part right before they stopped selling them.

You'll definitely want to replace that part.

I saw some good photos on line, looks like one important difference between mine and one I saw was the thickness of the flange where the alternator bolts on. I placed a straight edge across the fan opening and measured from that surface to the alternator mounting flange (bore). Mine is about 107mm deep. That depth locates the belt pulley, so it has to be correct. What does yours measure? How much you asking for it? Thanks, JL

It' not going back in. I can just see my alternator & fan taking flight in my engine compartment at 6800rpm. nuh! It's not going to happen.
Zef, your Targa is beutiful.

I might be able to make it work. How much do you want for it?

Already sold, anyone else have one?

I think the cracking was caused (or at least contributed to) by the metal strap that holds the housing to the case not being completely tight. I just remember that when I started removing the strap screw, it was easy to turn (not torqued down). And the bottom outside surface of the housing where it sets on the engine case saddle is very worn - looks like from constant movement or vibration against the case.

Go check yours before things get worn!

Finally got it finished! Went with powder coat on the new housing and the old fan. Didn't have any clearance issues with coating. I did have the powder coater mask off the alternator mounting bore and the steel center of the fan. Here is what it cost me:
Alternator rebuilt $156
New fan housing $360
Pwdr coat $125
Total $641

Cool, glad you were able to get back on the road. I'm amazed that Porsche quit making/selling that part since it definitely seems to eventually go the way of the dodo.

JCL, Did you have fitment issues with the Vertex piece? Others here stated the early units were poorly cast and had to either modify or return for another piece.
