Looking for advice on engine choice

This is not a 2.7 vs 3.0 debate, but more of some experienced advice on purchasing a upgraded 2.7 vs a running 3.0

2.7 has had some work done, carrera tensioners, time certs, possibly valve guides (75 CA motor), have not heard the motor run, will come with all CIS and exhaust to be running

For $2-3k more a running stock 3.0 from an 83. Compression numbers look good and it runs. Not sure of mileage, carrera tensioners done.

Am I better off spending more to get this unkown mileage running 3.0 OR this rebuilt (was running) upgraded 2.7? Putting aside HP and fun factor. Looking at longevity in a semi daily driver.

History and experience shows that no matter how much you spend on a 2.7 everybody looks at it as a core because the expense to build it is very high and to fix problems is over the value of the 2.7.
A 3.0 usually just needs a valve job and a cleanup and can run another engine 100K
Core values presently
2.7. $2 to 3,000
3.0. Core is $6000+

You really don’t know much about either engine. The timeserts on the 2.7 just brings it up to a 3.0 equivalence in that area.

Unless you know for sure head studs were done, it seems to me that there is at least equal risk in the 2 motors, maybe more in the 2.7 since you don’t know whether the mechanic that did the work knew what they were doing.

If it were me, I would look at how complete the motors are and if you can see them run.

After that, if you can do a leak down and look at the cylinders to determine their make, it will help your decision.

Keep in mind that the 2,7 is much older and the mag cases usually are needing expensive repairs.

The SC motor will probably need the divilar studs replaced, not a big deal.

IMO if the SC motor has Mahle cylinders jump on it.

If you are paying a shop, you will easily spend half of that getting that 2.7 reassembled and running.

Longetivywise, there are the averages which favor the 3.0 but that doesn't say much about these two particular engines.

Why is the 2.7 partly disassembled ?
