964 windsheild in an 85 - DON'T DO IT!

just picked up my third, yes third glass and it's the original for an 85 poped right in, tight, sealed just right. First rcvd 964 seal from our host, ordered the glass locally (signa), poped out the old pitted glass, cleaned out the sealant from the channel on the body, soaped up the seal, inserted string in seal & duct taped a rope around glass, twisted it tight to keep pressure on it & 1 1\2 hrs later it was in. So I thought. It just didn't look right, so worked around perimeter & got in front of the steering wheel and BOOM! cracked from top to bottom. Well thought I'm out of realm of expertise. So called glass supplier & ordered another glass & let them install it. Just chalk up $275 as a lerning experience. Dude shows up says no problem, I do 2 to 3 porsches a year. Ok lets play, 2 hours later, he's scratchin head this in not right. Game over! Just order glass for my 85 cab & be done with it.

I'm totally bummed!

A real bummer but its weird, I have just replaced my '81 window with a 964 seal and 964 windscreen, both worked without a problem, and I now don't have wet knees when it rains.

But I must admit that the first windscreen that was sent was incorrect and was too loose in the rubber, luckily it did not break.

Maybe there is a slight difference in the aperture's, although I was under the impression that they were all the same.

Cheers Jakes

I've actually had glass installers shouting at me in frustration. Needless to say, I got another peice of glass and a free installation from them after that experience. I think he has some anger management issues.

Jakes,

They are different. When the factory switched to the 964 glass (including the late 3.2's) in mid-October '88, the size of the windshield frame pinch weld lip was also changed by, as I recall 5 or 10mm. Not a large difference, but that is also why the 964 glass is slightly different in size from the earlier piece.

Good luck,
Tim

Here's a related query:

What glass should I put in my 1973 to get a built-in antenna for the radio?

once i had the 964 in you could push on the inside of the seal & it would push over the pinch weld like 10 mm all around. It seems the 964 body must not be as squared off at the pinch weld like the 911. If you compare the two seals, the 911 is squared off where it bottoms out at the pinch, 964 looks round where it bottoms. haven't had the opportunity to look first hand at a 964.
A guy a few blocks from me has a 964, so next time i see him out i'll get a good look, or maybe I was sent a 993 seal by mistake ?.
Thanks for all the input.

Regarding the Antenna: My 85 Carrera has the antenna built into the windshield...but it is one expensive windshield. The performance of the antenna is nothing to write home about either.

has anybody fitted and used with any success one of those interior mounted aerials? They can be stuck to glass or wherever you want. They have an small cigarette box size 'amplifier' attached to what looks like a model helicopter blade (about 15" long)?

How expensive is an 85 Carrera windshield with the antenna built in? Mine is has so many swirl marks, it gives me a headache at night.

I have put a 964 and 993 windshield in my 78SC. The 964 one broke after installation when I was screwing around admiring my work and leaned to hard on it. Both fit well and I had no problems with installation. The 993 windshield was about $60 at a hole in the wall auto glass place. I think the big problem comes with the quality of seal. I've used a cheapy seal and it just wasn't right. Go with a good quality seal for a good fit.

Just yesterday, we stopped selling the 964 seal as an alternative to the 1974-89 cars. We got too many people yelling at us that it just didn't fit right (no they weren't nice about it). So, aparently, this doesn't really work too well anymore. Perhaps they changed the seal recently?

Just to clarify, though, Wayne, you may want to make that decision apply to retrofits to '74 to '88 cars, with specific questions about '89's. A large percentage of '89 3.2 cars came from the factory with the modified windshield frame, larger 964 glass and 964 trimless seal.

I recently replaced my SC's windshield with original 911 glass, original seal with trim, see thread here

Install took 10 min, one person job, no leaks. I think you have to be careful with 964 glass, make sure you have the correct rubber seal for it. Looking at the responses here, it appears there is still a risk of cracking.
