Windshield washer rehab

Windshield washer rehab ('78SC, basic system)

Awhile back while putting the trunk back together I re-attached all the windshield washer components and confirmed that it 'kinda' worked but was definitely plugged up some where. While buying hardware at Belmetric I came across their selection of Cohline washer hose and bought some for this project, the 6mm hose fits tightly over the 4mm, acting similar to the way the factory clamped the connections.

There's also a section of clear rigid line that connects the front flex lines to the nozzle flex lines. Sourced that rigid line at McMaster (8365K22 Hard Nylon Plastic Clear Tubing for Fuel Nylon, 3 mm ID, 5 mm OD, 10 ft. Length).

I was concerned that there was probably some dirt/sediment in the reservoir that would re-foul my new system so reluctantly pulled the reservoir out for a thorough cleaning, single bolt at the top and strap/bolt at the bottom.

Glad I did, the tank had a sludge that was the consistency of Jello, must be 40 years of congealed washer fluid, nasty stuff (Lot's more came out, most slipped down the drain before I went for the camera).

The pick-up in the reservoir has a filter and check valve at the bottom which was also plugged with the Jello. Simple Green and sloshing water through it cleaned it up fairly well.

Working on putting it all back together, a bit of heat and silicone spray aids in making the connections.

The T fitting is on the pressure line to the squirters, I guess the purpose is to return excess pressure to the reservoir.

Waiting on new squirters and check valves from Pelican, then button it all back up. Should be good as new.

Great work! I did the same thing last summer. It’s so rewarding when they finally work as they should!

Great job.

"Congealed washer fluid"!? Yikes!

While you are in there.... Overhaul the pump, it's easy. My pump was full of green stuff and now works like it should.

I did this ten years ago. Think it needs to be done again.
