915 Transmission shift 3-4-5 problem
The shifter in my 1978 Porsche 911 has no resistance going to 3-4 -5th gear.
1-2 gear is spring loaded to the left, but when I go for 3rd gear I easily end up in 5th gear with zero spring load. Is the problem the shifter or the transmission ?? I bought the car that way. Thanks, and greetings, Harold |
A stock shift lever is not spring loaded to the left. Only 5th and reverse are spring loaded.
You may have an aftermarket set up. Take a picture of it. |
Could be shifter bushings, shift rod coupler, or the guide fork in the transmission came loose.
Pull up the shift boot and take a picture so we know what shifter you have. |
I’ll put the money on the guide fork on the inspection plate
If that’s the fault replace the whole plate and fork, don’t try to fix it Bruce |

What a crappy thing to do. Greetings, and thanks http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1540567437.jpg |
more shifter woes
Turning part 3 around would also not work.
The shift fork is for a standard shifter while all other parts are from a short shift kit. So need a short shifter shift fork. WOW |

An early SC 915 shift housing illustration follows: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1540598044.png Not sure why your factory stock 915 shift lever has spring tension on the 1/2 side. Typically, only on 5th/Rev. AFAIK, a 930 4-speed turbo shifter doesn't have any springs The issue may be due to a worn front shift shaft bushing (item 22 above). Excess play here prevents the lever from selecting the proper gears. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1540597745.jpg Sherwood |
