Sloppy shifting

Hey all-

I really wanted to improve the quality and feel of the shifting in my '75, and I thought the best place to start would be a short shift kit. Specifically, I was mis-shifting a lot from 2nd to 3rd (it's a 915); it just never felt right, as if I needed to pause for a sec in neutral on my way to 3rd just to make sure I was gonna get in...

My thinking was that a fancy shift kit (Wevo or Rennshift) with their heavy centering springs would help keep the shifter aligned on its center (3rd/4th gear) axis, thus helping to better guide the movement from 2nd into 3rd.

So, I went ahead and sprung for the Rennshift kit. It looks great, and installation was relatively painless. The feel is much, much tighter, and very close to what I was hoping for.

However, my 2nd to 3rd gear shifts were still not smooth. I still couldn't reliably get into 3rd with a single motion- there was still a little "hitch" on the way into 3rd that would require patience/correction. Most of you probably know where this is going...

I finally decided that I needed to check the shift linkage. Shoulda done that first! Take a look- that pile of crumbs is one of the bushings, which fell out of the linkage rubber boot when I opened it up...

You can also see that the bushing on the other side was about to go. The linkage was so sloppy that it's a wonder I was able to shift normally at all!

I quickly ordered the Wevo linkage from our host, and I'm happy to say that I'm good to go. I could have just replaced the bushings, and the Wevo linkage is a bit spendy, but this way I'll never have to worry about this again Shifting now feels fast and precise.

So, lesson learned- check the easy stuff first!

Best,

Jake

Can you please tell if you feel an increase in vibration to the shift lever when you switched from the factory coupler to the vevo coupler.

@fizeus I don't feel any additional vibration, per se, but I can say that the whole setup feels much better- a much more solid and "connected" feel. It does a slightly different sound to it (not louder or softer, just different), which may be related to your vibration question.
