Carrera 2 stalls out while driven

Hello, newbie here on this forum. I have a problem that just developed with my '91 Carrera 2 w/ Tiptronic that hopefully you folks might have an insight on.

I was driving along just fine, when the engine just cut out and stopped running. This happened twice in the same day, and fortunately each time I was able to coast safely to the curb. After about 2-3 minutes, I was able to restart the car and get to my destination. Obviously, my wife and I cannot safely drive the car until this problem is fixed. Any ideas as to where to start? The car has about 86K on it.

Thanks in advance!

In my case, this same symptom was fixed by replacing the two timing sensors that pick up from the "crank fire" ring on the flywheel. More likely it is the infamous relay switch under the driver seat attached to the engine "brain".

What is the name and/or the part number of this "infamous" relay, and what is its function? is it easily replaced?

DME Relay. Most carry a spare at all times. Our host sell them.

Agreed DME relays are problematic. There’s a date printed printed on the replay. The date won’t rule out a relay issue, but will give you piece of mind, the older it is.

The DME relay in a 964 is located in the front fuse and relay box, not under the seat like the 3.2 Carrera is.

Thanks, guys. The relay looks inexpensive and easy to replace, it makes for an obvious target for a fix. I'll order one from the host and let you know if that fixes it.

An update: Replaced the DME relay; it was super easy to locate and replace (thanks, RedCoupe). So far so good, hope that solves the problem. Thanks, again, all.

How old is your fuel filter?

Hmmm, I'll have to check, but all seems well for now.
