Timing settings on an SC?
I have a copy of Waynes book and i was following the instructions for setting the timing. I found the 5 on the pulley and set the timing such that it lined up with the mark on the fan housing. Is that where its supposed to be? my bottom end power went to poop and the midrange power was gone as well. the 5 was to the right of the Z1 mark. Im assuming that is 5 degrees Before TDC. What is the best advance to set an 82 3.0 engine? I did this with the idle approx 950 RPMs.
As always, any help is greatly appreciated. |
If you have an adjustable timing light, set it at 35 degrees total advance at 6,000 rpms. If it starts to detonate (ping) retard it a few degress until it stops.

If you do a search there was a lengthy discussion on timing.
On your 78 you are setting the initial timing correctly, 5 BTC at idle, vacuum connected, if I remember right. You also need to rev up to 6000 rpm and check to see if you are getting full advance of 26 degrees, vacuum disconnected I believe. In the older thread there was a lot of mention of higher advance, something like 33 degrees...but be carefull you don't get any pinging. Again, look for the tread, it had a lot of great info. If I can find it I will post it here in a minute. |
What was it set at prior to your adjustment? That wuold be a good point of reference in case you mess up.

Just be careful. Do you have a 78 SC with a 82 3.0? 78 SC 3.0 came with timing advance only, and I believe 82 3.0 cam with timing advance and retard. I'm talking about the vacuum advance/retard pod on the distributor. Make sure what you have and go accordingly, because setting timing is different on those two distributors. |
PBS does have it right. If you have the advance feature on your timing light, just time it at full advance. 35 degrees with all hoses hooked up. Back it off if it pings.
I believe that early SCs were timed at 5 degrees after TDC, with hoses attached. I know that later SCs ('82 and '83) were timed with the hose detached (the black hose, which connects on the right) at 5 degrees before TDC. |
