Bob, if your transmission is a pre-68, the transmission CV joint flanges had oil caps sealed with O-rings. Flanges after 67 were a different design and did not require oil caps.
If you have the earlier design, then either oil is leaking past the cap, or the cap was removed and never replaced.

901 Transaxle stub shaft oilleak

Thanks for the info, my car is a'66 with the original trans axle but has no cap. Any idea where I could find one. Tried to look part number up on Porsche Classic Parts but they don't list one. Bob Shafer

The part number for the oil cap, #7 in the illustration below, is 901.332.239.10. It hasn't been available from Porsche for many years, but they are being reproduced.
There was a thread about this a few months ago on ESR (Early 911S Registry) in which I was involved. Google the part number, with or without separations, and see what you find.
The clip, #9, is actually harder to find. Some people just resort to packing the flange cavity with RTV silicone, but it's much better to install the correct parts.

Purists avert your eyes, but something loosely resembling Clip #9 can be easily fabricated from a piece of a steel coathanger.

Internal circlips and retaining rings are common industrial items that can be used as substitutes for the original clips...

Coat hanger wire would not make a very good substitute, even though there is not much force against the clip.

Google found the snap ring readily enough:

901.332.289.10 Porsche Snap Ring - Loebro -
(2 Suggested) $1.00 Buy
although most list it as N/A, there's one supplier that doesn't..

I've bought stuff from them recently others had as NLA or Special Order from Germany, and they took it off the shelf and mailed it to me...

Google also located a different supplier listing the cap itself (but they don't have the snap ring):

LSD Closing cap, 901.332.239.02

Matt,
As one of the resident transmission experts, you are certainly correct. The cap listed above is for open, Lobro difs. I have never had permission to change the ESR thread title, but the text reflects the true usage.

If you ever need the LSD caps, I make them too:
WET '65-'68 911 Fig 5/3, #17 901.332.239.02 Closing cap Qty: 2

Jim, just to hopefully sort out the applications on these caps...

The 901.332.239.10 caps were used in Lobro flanges up through 67. The 68 "simplified differential" flanges and all later versions did not use oil caps.
They are also used in the early Lobro flanges with some of Matt's TBDs and LSDs.

The 901.332.239.02 flat caps are Nadella flange caps, used in those flanges for both open differentials and ZF LSDs. They're actually more common and important for the open diff flanges.
They are also used in Nadella open diff flanges with some of Matt's TBDs and LSDs.

The Nadella flanges that used the flat caps...
